The 80-year-old man who was brutally assaulted and robbed in a Lancaster grocery store restroom died on Wednesday, his family have confirmed.
As per reports, Roberto Flores Lopez was set upon in the restroom of Superior Grocers in Lancaster, California on July 8. Authorities said that his wallet was stolen during the attack and he was the victim of a beat down that left him hospitalized with injuries including a broken jaw, nose and several broken ribs.
Sadly, Lopez died on Wednesday morning in hospital. He leaves behind his wife, four children, 16 grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Investigators circulated photos of the suspect in the attack – 22-year-old Damaris Wade – and he later surrendered himself to authorities. Wade’s girlfriend was initially charged with being an accessory to the crime, but that charge was later dropped.
Wade, meanwhile, was charged with attempted murder, elder abuse with infliction of injury and second-degree robbery. If convicted as currently charged, he could face a 25-year-to-life state prison sentence, but the charges may yet be amended following Lopez’s death.
I don’t know about you, but I’m sick and tired of hearing about needless murders and crimes against innocent people. What sort of society do we live in when an 80-year-old man can be beaten to death in a restroom over something as trivial as a wallet?
