Angelina Jolie has revealed that the stress related to her bitter divorce from Brad Pitt led to a number of worrying health issues.
The two global superstars parted ways in 2016 following a relationship that had lasted 12 years in total (ten years of dating and two that saw them married). Their divorce was finalized in 2019, and since then Jolie and Pitt have locked horns over a number of matters, including their Chateau Miraval business and custody of their six children.
At one point in time, they were arguably the most beloved power couple in Hollywood, but the current state of affairs between the Mr. and Mrs Smith stars is nowhere close to being harmonious.
Indeed, speaking in a recent interview, Jolie admitted that she had suffered greatly during the period of her and Brad’s separation. The stresses related to the ending of their relationship even sparked a diagnosis of Bell’s palsy.
Malificent star Joline told WSJ Magazine: “My body reacts very strongly to stress. My blood sugar goes up and down. I suddenly had Bell’s palsy six months before my divorce.”
The Mayo Clinic describes Bell’s palsy as a condition causing sudden weakness in the muscles on one side of the face:
“In most cases, the weakness is temporary and significantly improves over weeks. The weakness makes half of the face appear to droop. Smiles are one-sided, and the eye on the affected side resists closing.”
The acrimonious nature of Angelina and Brad’s split is well known to anyone who has followed their lives, and the situation seems just as tense today as ever it was.
In the aftermath of her divorce, Angelina has been hard at work taking on new film projects and building her fashion business, Atelier Jolie.
“We had to heal,” the Oscar-winner said of the past few years. “There are things we needed to heal from.”
Earlier this year in June, it was reported that Angelina and Brad are still locked in a legal battle over Miraval, their estate in the south of France, which produces the namesake successful wines. The couple bought the property in 2008, just before the birth of their twins Knox and Vivienne.
It also served as the site for their wedding in 2014, upon which Pitt gifted Jolie 10% of his stake in the property and wine-making ventures; making the two of them 50/50 owners.
Now as the couple’s relationship and subsequent legal battles have turned sour, so has the fight over Miraval. When the two of them were going into business together, Jolie’s business manager suggested a doomsday clause where if the couple were to split, the other buy the share in the property. The two of them rejected this clause, thinking the day would never come.
On January 21, 2021, Jolie emailed Pitt, an email which has since then made public. In the email, she mentions that she writes “with a heavy heart.” She informs Pitt of her decision to sell Miraval, “a business that is centered around alcohol.” This is perhaps a reference to the now infamous plane event where an intoxicated Pitt “choked” one of their children and then “struck another in the face” before he poured alcohol on her and the children.
Jolie filed for divorce within days of the alleged event.
Jolie further wrote in the email: “Even now impossible to write this without crying,” Jolie wrote. “Above all, it is the place we brought the twins home to, and where we were married over a plaque in my mother’s memory. A place…where I thought I would grow old…. But it is also the place that marks the beginning of the end of our family.”
“Miraval for me died September 2016,” she wrote, continuing to refer to the date of Pitt’s alleged meltdown on the plane; the actress continued, “and everything I have seen in the years since has sadly confirmed that.”
