Bruce Springsteen, 74, confirms the death of his mother at 98

Messages of condolence are pouring in for Bruce Springsteen after the iconic singer confirmed the passing of his beloved mother Adele on social media.

The Boss took to Instagram yesterday to announce that his mom died age 98, sharing a heartfelt tribute that including a clip of her dancing. The post’s caption had lyrics from his popular 1998 hit The Wish, a track said to have been inspired by his mother.

“I’m older but you’ll know me in a glance. We’ll find us a Little rock ‘n roll bar and we’ll go out and dance,” one of the lyrics reads.

Back in 2021, Springsteen told a Broadway audience that Adele, 95 at the time, had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for 10 years and could no longer speak or stand.

“That’s taken a lot away from us,” the 74-year-old said. He added that despite her disease, “the need to dance hasn’t left her.”

As per Springsteen’s Instagram post, his mom was born on May 4, 1925. No cause of death has yet been given.

As well as being the inspiration behind The Wish, Adele was reportedly also the cornerstone of Springsteen’s anthem American Land. Speaking to Uncut magazine in 2002, the Born to Run singer told how he took after his mother.

“I took after my mom in a certain sense. Her life had an incredible consistency, work, work, work every day, and I admired that greatly.

“I’d visit her at her job sometimes, and it was filled with men and women who seemed to have a purpose. I found a lot of inspiration in those simple acts.”

In the latter half of 2023, Springsteen himself was forced to postpone a number of concerts after being diagnosed peptic ulcer disease.

“Bruce Springsteen has continued to recover steadily from peptic ulcer disease over the past few weeks and will continue treatment through the rest of the year on doctor’s advice,” statement read at the time.

“With this in mind, and out of an abundance of caution, all remaining 2023 tour dates for Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band will be postponed until 2024.”

Rest in peace, Adele Springsteen!
