It’s been a long and difficult year for Bruce Willis and his loved ones. The world-famous actor has taken a step back from the spotlight following his frontotemporal diagnosis, and though updates from his family are regular and fairly candid, there’s a lot fans aren’t privy to.
Bruce’s wife, Emma Heming Willis, recently confirmed that “it’s hard to know” if the Die Hard star is aware that he has dementia. If reports are to be believed, Bruce’s loved ones have rallied around him in the months following his diagnosis, while his wife, Emma, has assumed the role of his carer.
Yet though the outlook remains bleak – Emma herself stated earlier this week that there is no cure for Bruce’s condition – the actor himself remains upbeat and positive, according to his daughter, Tallulah.
It’s perhaps not so strange that fans are now seeing less and less of Bruce Willis following his diagnosis.
The iconic Hollywood star retired from the spotlight last year after revealing that he was battling aphasia, a condition that left him confused and made it difficult for him to remember lines.
Fans praying for a turn of good fortune were then left bitterly disappointed in early 2023, when Willis’s family confirmed that he had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.
Numerous updates have been given by his loved ones these past few months, and the latest – coming from his daughter, Tullulah – is at least one that has the potential to put a smile on fans’ faces.
Tallulah, 29, revealed in an essay published in British Vogue that her father still knows who she is, and that he still lights up when she enters the room.
She wrote: “He still knows who I am and lights up when I enter the room. (He may always know who I am, give or take the occasional bad day. One difference between FTD and Alzeimer’s dementia is that, at least early in the disease, the former is characterised by language and motor deficits, while the latter features more memory loss.)”
The actress also confided that she’s unsure if she should talk to her father in the past or present tense due to how much he has changed as a result of his condition.
“I keep flipping between the present and the past when I talk about Bruce: he is, he was, he is, he was,” she said. “That’s because I have hopes for my father that I’m so reluctant to let go of.”
Earlier this year, Tallulah wrote a candid letter explaining her “grief” at having to witness her father’s ongoing health battles.
She told Vogue in late May: “I remember a moment when it hit me painfully: I was at a wedding in the summer of 2021 on Martha’s Vineyard, and the bride’s father made a moving speech. Suddenly I realized that I would never get that moment, my dad speaking about me in adulthood at my wedding.
“It was devastating. I left the dinner table, stepped outside, and wept in the bushes.”
