Grandma who texted wrong teen for Thanksgiving set to share 4th holiday with him

You’ve probably heard of the story involving Wanda Dench and teenager Jamal Hinton at Thanksgiving. If you haven’t, then buckle up: you’re in for one joyous ride.

Back in 2016, Dench accidentally invited Hinton over for Thanksgiving. In a heartwarming turn of events, he accepted the invitation. Now, four years on, the pair have maintained their yearly tradition.

If you’re anything like me, you will have messaged or called the wrong person by accident at some point in your life. For two unlikely friends, however, a text to a wrong number forged a friendship that is withstanding the test of time.

Wanda, now 62, sent a message four years ago intended for her grandson. It was to invite him to her house for Thanksgiving.

Jamal, a high school senior at the time, received the message instead, however. He asked the sender for a picture of themselves to confirm it was, indeed, his grandma.

When Wanda sent her picture the pair realized they had their wires crossed.

“You not my grandma,” he replied with a laughing emoji, adding: “Can I still get a plate though?”

Wanda replied: “Of course you can. That’s what grandmas do … feed everyone.”

Needless to say, when Jamal tweeted about the initial interaction it went viral.

Now 20 years old, Jamal, of Phoenix, Arizona continues to return to Wanda’s house each year. He posts a picture of the pair on every occasion, much to the delight of an expectant following.

So it seems that today, November 28, the pair are meeting again. This time, however, it’s at the home of Jamal’s girlfriend’s aunt.

Jamal told Good Morning America:  “[Wanda] is a really good person, I really enjoy the time I spend with her.”

We hope the pair enjoy their Thanksgiving dinner! We’ll see you next year.
