Gwen Stefani was recently performing for an audience of thousands in West Palm Beach, Florida, when she looked out into the crowd and saw something that caught her eye. A fan was holding up a handwritten sign.
But unfortunately, Stefani couldn’t quite make out what it said. So being someone who is as interested in her fans as they are in her, Stefani asked the woman to pass the sign up to her.
When Stefani read out loud what this woman had to say, you could see that it melted her heart. “My son was bullied from 1st to 5th grade. He would come home every day upset, but he would go to his room, listen to your music and smile.”
After reading those touching words, there was no way was Stefani going to continue her set without meeting the woman’s son first. So she gestured to the boy, named Brandon, and called out, “Get up here right now!”
Members of the crowd passed Brandon up to the stage and the boy suddenly found himself in front of his idol. It was a once in a lifetime moment. And when Stefani held both of Brandon’s hands and raised them in the air in kind of triumphant pose and then gave him a hug, Brandon couldn’t hold back the tears. In an instant, he seemed to have the confidence he’d need to stand up to his bullies.
Stefani shared the moment with her fans on facebook and also wrote, “About 3 years ago when things were hard in my life I prayed to God everyday that I could get a chance to use my gift that God gave me and make a difference in some way in this world – last night this little guy was the answer to my prayers #zerotoleranceforbullies #onelove #thisiswhatthetruthfeelslike”
I’m so impressed by how Stefani uses her fame to empower kids like Brandon. It brought me to tears knowing that this little boy would walk into school the next day a changed person. Check out the beautiful moment below!
