There’s just something especially comforting about listening to birds chirping away in the trees. It’s why many of us opt to have bird houses, feeders and drinking pools placed in our backyard.
Now, the idea of birds feeling comfortable zipping around our yards is one that most people like. That said, it comes with certain hazards, not least for our feathered friends…
Sadly, it’s all too common for birds to fly straight into a window without ever even knowing it was there. Such collisions often result in serious injuries, including broken beaks and necks.
There is a way to avoid these unfortunate accidents, though I’ll be the first to admit I didn’t know it until very recently. Luckily, I stumbled upon a life hack intended to help keep our winged pals safe from windows, and it turns out all you need is a white pen!
We’ve all been there before… you’re sitting reading a book or listening to the radio when you heard a painful ‘Thump!’ against the window.
If, like me, you live in the countryside, you’ll be all too accustomed to having birds collide with your windows. I’ve watched such incidents play out several times in recent years, and found birds either dazed or, tragically, dead soon after.
The unfortunate truth is that many birds can’t see windows until it’s too late to stop themselves. Unless there’s a glare on the glass, most have no way of knowing there’s a solid object blocking their path.
Incredibly, a 2014 US study found that at at least 100 million birds are killed annually in the United States due to collisions with buildings (particularly windows).
Yet though the odds appear damning, there are certain things you can do to help our avian amigos if you find a disproportionate number of them to be crashing into your windows regularly…
Streaks on windows
One very simple method of letting a bird know that there’s a pane of glass is by drawing white streaks on the window. Just take a pen and add some lines to the glass – that way birds will know it cannot be flown through.
