Joe Biden spends $86 million on hotel rooms to house migrants at the US border

Joe Biden is spending $86 million on hotel rooms near the US-Mexico border in order to house as many as 1,200 migrants, as per reports.

One of the new President’s pledges upon replacing Donald Trump in the White House centered around what he labeled as a “top-to-bottom” review of the immigration system.

The Trump’s administration’s stance on immigration was notoriously rigid, and much has been made of the thousands of migrant families reportedly separated from their children at the border.

Biden promised to tackle the issue in a different manner, though he’s come under criticism in the last few weeks for reopening a detention center and putting plans in place to built another on top of toxic military waste.

Now, reports state that his administration have secured an $86 million contract for hotel rooms near the US-Mexico border to house up to 1,200 migrants.

Recent statistics have shown that there are currently overwhelming numbers of migrants trying to enter the US – between January and February, the number of migrant family members attempting to pass the southwestern border increased from 7,000 to 19,000.

The Washington Post, meanwhile, estimate anywhere up to two million migrants could try and enter the U.S. this year, which is a significant rise on numbers from recent years.

CNN say there are as many as 5,000 unaccompanied children in US Customs ad Border Protection custody.

Under federal law, unaccompanied children must be transferred to the Department of Health and Human Services within 72 hours. Sadly, though., due to rising numbers and issues relating to the current COVID-19 pandemic, that limit hasn’t always been abided by.
