The very best actors in showbiz make everything seem so effortless, so easy. In fact, their on-screen offerings sometimes look so natural that we as the audience can forget the enormity of the task they’re undertaking.
I mean, how often do you stop to contemplate the work that lies behind any given actor’s portrayal? That’s not to mention the courage it takes to get in front of a camera and put yourself out there in the first place.
No, I think most of us fail to realize just how stressful a profession acting can be at times. Sure, it’s one that can promise fame and fortune like few other vocations can, but such success comes at a price, and I’m sure there are plenty of actors out there who have a tougher time of things – or at least have experienced tough times – than they would ever let on.
In any case, it would appear that the eternally beautiful Michelle Pfeiffer doesn’t have any qualms concerning opening up on past insecurities.
In a recent episode of The Skinny Confidential podcast, the legendary actress admitted that she “cried herself to sleep” while filming Scarface because she was terrified of working with Al Pacino…
These days Pfeiffer is a household name. When it comes to large-scale productions and Hollywood hype, the 65-year-old has been there and seen and done it all.
Yet once upon a yesteryear, the actress was new on the scene, a fresh-faced 25-year-old with barely any acting credits to her name and a longing to find her feet in the industry.
When the opportunity arose to play Al Pacino’s love interest in Scarface, Pfeiffer desperately wanted the role. Ultimately, however, after landing it, the actress realized she was absolutely terrified of her co-star.
Pfeiffer told The Skinny Confidential podcast: “I cried myself to sleep almost every night on Scarface.
“It was obviously a huge deal for me.”
The Dangerous Minds star also revealed that Pacino initially wanted “someone else” to be cast as his love interest for Scarface. At the time, Pfeiffer’s only other big acting role had come in Grease 2.
She recalled: “Then, like a month later, they [the casting agents] called me back for a screen test.”
As for what exactly she found frightening about Al Pacino, Pfeiffer said: “Would you be scared to work with Al Pacino?”
She then went on to admit that her biggest fear with regards working with the now-83-year-old, already a major star by that time, was that she would be bad.
I guess we can safely say that her fears were unsubstantiated! I don’t know about you, but I think Michelle Pfeiffer was great in Scarface.
