When it comes to delivering big babies, 29-year-old Chrissy Corbitt is no stranger.
You see, Chrissy’s first two children weighed 9 lbs and 10lbs respectively, so when she fell pregnant for the fourth time she was expecting the boy or girl to tip the scales on the heavy side.
Nothing, however, could have prepared her for what would happen …
It was 2017 when the due date of Chrissy, a stay-at-home mom from Keystone Heights, Florida, drew close.
Her baby bump was so huge that it was impossible to hide. More than that, it was so big that people could barely look upon it without making comment.
One of the reasons for her huge bump was that Chrissy suffered with pregnancy diabetes early on. Increased blood sugar during the first three months of pregnancy increases the risk of fetal abnormalities.
If blood sugar spikes during the last three months of pregnancy it can cause the fetus to grow rapidly, which thereby increases the risk of complications during birth.
Doctors estimated that the little girl within Chrissy’s belly would weigh between 9lbs and 10lbs at birth.
In the end, Chrissy gave birth daughter Carleigh via C-section, a week earlier than expected. When the baby was born, Chrissy witnessed scenes of jubilation in the delivery room. She thought that a little strange – it hadn’t happened during any of her three previous births.
It wasn’t until the nurses told her the baby’s weight that Chrissy realized why there was such a reaction.
”I remember the doctor saying, ‘I don’t think this baby is going to end,’” Chrissy explains.
When the mom got her first glimpse of her newborn daughter, she could hardly believe her eyes.
”It looked they pulled a toddler out of my belly. She’s so big,” Chrissy says.
Carleigh turned out to be the biggest baby that doctor Eric Edelenbos had ever delivered. When the newborn was placed on the scales, a gasp echoed through the delivery room.
The baby tipped the scales at 13lbs!
Their daughter was so big that Chrissy and Larry had to donate all of the newborn clothes and diapers that they had bought before her arrival. She required much bigger diapers and clothes than they had expected. To put into perspective, their daughter fit into clothes that would normally be for a 9-month-old baby.
But, despite her size, Carleigh is a healthy baby, and her mother is overjoyed.
”She’s just filled with rolls. She’s just a big squishy baby. She’s so adorable,” Chrissy says.
Carleigh is still not quite the biggest baby ever born. The Guinness Book of Records reports that in 1879 a baby was born weighing 23lbs. Yikes…
In any case, I’m so happy that Chrissy had a healthy birth, despite her little girl’s size!
