Police in Brooklyn found dozens of bodies being stored in unrefrigerated trucks outside a funeral home, and some lying on the facility’s floor on Wednesday, according to the New York Post.
As per reports, between 40 to 60 bodies were found in U-Haul box trucks outside Andrew Cleckley Funeral Services and on the building’s floor. Authorities were notified as to a potential problem when neighbors noticed a foul odor.
Sources say corpses were stacked on top of each other in the trucks. A terrible smell was emanating from inside, forcing neighboring store owners to call the police.
The street was closed off to the public on Wednesday evening, with NYPD detectives and several other city agencies investigating the trucks.
John DiPietro, who owns a neighboring property, said bodies had been stored in the trucks for at least several weeks over the course of the coronavirus pandemic.
“You don’t respect the dead that way. That could have been my father, my brother,” he said. “You don’t do that to the dead.”
Police sources went on to say that as well as the two U-Haul trucks holding corpses, the facility also had a further two refrigerated trucks and a third with empty caskets.
The funeral home told officers the bodies were meant to be going to a crematorium, but they hadn’t yet picked them up.
An anonymous official told the New York Times that the bodies had been stored in the trucks after the company’s freezer broke down.
“They were storing them in U-Haul trucks; we knew what was going on but not the extent,” the owner of nearby Pemco supplies.
“One thing to be [killed] by the coronavirus, another to be treated inhumanly.”
Indeed. I can’t imagine how I would react if this was one of my loved ones. I can only hope the people responsible for this lack of sentimentality get what’s coming to them.
