Teen cashier pays for cop’s dessert – couple behind throw fit and teen is suspended

We’re taught from an early age to always endeavour to do nice things. As kids we’re rightfully told that making someone else’s day a little bit easier is something to strive for.

For one Texas teen, however, every lesson on caring gestures may have gone out the window, after what started as a thoughtful act landed him in trouble.

Zack Randolph, an 18-year-old employee at Great American Cookies, decided to pay for an officer’s dessert as a way of saying thank you. Little did he know he’d end up suspended for the act …

When a police officer came into Great American Cookies one day, teen cashier Zach Randolph decided he wanted to do something nice. The officer was there to pick up some dessert, and so Randolph told him it was free of charge; he was going to pay for it himself.

The 18-year-old pulled out his wallet and paid the $2.75, not even taking advantage of the employee discount so that the store would get the right amount owed.

According to Randolph: “He’s just a really nice guy and on top of that he has a badge. That’s enough for me to buy him something. That’s the least I can do.”

The teen was rightfully feeling pretty good about his actions, up until the moment the next customers approached the counter. The man and woman demanded free desserts too, and then proceeded to give Randolph a hard time when he said they’d have to pay as normal.

As per Randolph’s mom, the couple were confrontational to say the least. The man purportedly told her son: “You know you’re probably going to get fired.”

Randolph went further on the subject, stating that he’d even felt threatened by the man’s behavior.

“He put his daughter down and came around to the side and was about to come back and come at me and thankfully my assistant manager and my co-worker stopped him,” he said.

Sadly, that wasn’t the end of it, however. The teen was written up and received a week-long suspension from work. Naturally, neither he nor his mother could believe it.

In response, Randolph’s mom published the story in a Facebook post, one that has quickly spread around the internet. It wasn’t long before the company issued an apology for their actions, as well as offering to pay for the hours Randolph would have worked during his suspension.

Even so, the fact they punished him in the first place is truly shocking, as is the behavior of the man and woman who complained because he’d given the police officer a free treat.

It’s difficult to fathom why some people act the way they do. All we can say is that we hope Randolph doesn’t let this experience deter him from being a caring, genuine guy.
