A man and a woman had been married for more than 50 years. They shared everything with each other, except for one thing. The woman had an old shoe box on the shelf in a closet that she absolutely forbid to her husband to open. The man didn’t think much about the box, as it didn’t seem like it contained anything of value. So after a while, he forgot completely forget that it was there. Until one day, when his wife was in the hospital…
The woman was quite ill when she was admitted to the hospital. Because she thought she was reaching the end of her life, she gave her husband permission to go home and bring her the box.
The old man set up a ladder in the closet and climbed up. When he pulled the lid off the box and looked inside, he thought his eyes were deceiving him.
There were two hand-crocheted dolls and around $95,000 inside. Astounded, he returned to the hospital and asked his wife for an explanation.
“Right before we got married,” the old woman told her astonished husband, “my grandmother told me the secret to a happy marriage was to never argue. She said if I ever got angry with you, I should keep quiet and crochet a doll.”
The old man was touched. There were only two dolls in the shoebox—she had only been angry with him two times over the course of their marriage! He scooped his wife up and gave her a kiss.
“But where did the money come from?” He asked her.
“Oh, that?” She said with a smile, “That’s the money I made from selling the dolls.”
I don’t know if this story is fact or fiction, but regardless, we can learn something from it. Unfortunately, the woman’s husband learned this lesson perhaps a little too late. And his wife? She was that much the richer for it. 🙂
