The cause of Bronny James’ sudden cardiac arrest has been revealed.
A James family spokesperson issued a statement one month after the 18-year-old was rushed to the hospital after collapsing during practice with the University of Southern California Trojans’ basketball team.
“After a comprehensive initial evaluation at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center led by Dr. Merije Chukumerije and follow-up evaluations at the Mayo Clinic led by Dr. Michael J. Ackerman and Atlantic Health/Morristown Medical Center led by Dr. Matthew W. Martinez, the probable cause of Mr. James’ sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) has been identified,” the statement read.
“It is an anatomically and functionally significant Congenital Heart Defect which can and will be treated.”
James, who is the son of LeBron James, suffered cardiac arrest July 24 while practicing with the USC basketball team.
The teen was rushed to the hospital where he spent three days.
At the time his doctor, Merije Chukumerije, told ET, “Although his workup will be ongoing, we are hopeful for his continued progress and are encouraged by his response, resilience, and his family and community support.”
Since his incident, James has spent time away from the team as he’s focused on his health. While he has been photographed attending a Dodgers game and Drake concert, he has also been seen at the Mayo Clinic where he’s had several follow-up appointments.
Doctors and the James family are “very confident” once Bronny’s congenital heart defect is treated he will be able to return to the court.
