Doctor warns of ‘scromiting’ linked to cannabis use as woman says pain was worse than childbirth

If you haven’t heard the term “scromiting” yet, brace yourself – because the reality behind it is as bad as it sounds.

The word, a mashup of “screaming” and “vomiting,” describes what sufferers go through. It’s known as cannabis hyperemesis syndrome, or CHS, and it’s directly tied to heavy marijuana use.

According to Cleveland Clinic, “cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) happens when you have cycles of nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain after using cannabis (marijuana) for a long time.”

And it’s reportedly showing up in emergency rooms across the country with alarming frequency, according to UNILAD.

One woman shared her experience in a TikTok video: “I was crying and screaming and I was like ‘I can’t take this anymore!’ I hate my life,” she said, according to the outlet, before describing the pain as worse than childbirth. “I’m just begging God, like please make it stop!”

What is cannabis hyperemesis syndrome?

Dr. Sam Wang, a pediatric toxicologist based in Colorado, has seen this firsthand. “They’re writhing, holding their stomach, and can’t stop vomiting,” he told CNN. “For some of our kids, this is their fifth ER visit in the past two months, with symptoms that they can’t control.”

CHS was first identified in 2004, when researchers in Australia connected chronic marijuana use to severe, recurring bouts of nausea and vomiting. When patients stopped using cannabis, their symptoms got better – but when they started using again, the condition came right back.

If left untreated, things can spiral fast. “Regardless of whether it’s cannabis hyperemesis syndrome or another virus that makes you vomit a lot,” Dr. Wang said, “if you let it go too long, you can have electrolyte disturbances, go into shock and have organ failure. CHS is no different.” Without proper medical care, it can become life-threatening.

Doctors are urging people to take CHS seriously – especially parents of teenagers and young adults who may be using cannabis heavily without understanding the risks.

According to Cleveland Clinic, “CHS is more than just a side effect of marijuana use. It’s a condition that can lead to serious health complications if you don’t get treatment for it.”
