Frank Caprio, the beloved TV judge, was able to ring the bell, signaling the end of his cancer treatment, only seven months after receiving his diagnosis.
“I went from getting pancreatic cancer and not many people having any hope that I live — to successfully completing five doses of radiation,” the 87-year-old said.
In December 2023, Caprio, star of the reality TV show Caught in Providence, revealed in an emotional video that he had been “diagnosed with cancer of the pancreas, which is an insidious form of cancer.”
He initially began treatment in Rhode Island and Massachusetts before seeking treatment in Florida at the suggestion of a friend.
Caprio endured six months of chemotherapy and five rounds of radiation, which he told People was “debilitating.”
Despite the draining treatment and his prognosis, Caprio managed to keep a positive attitude.
“You have to dig down deep within your courage and make up your mind that you’re going to beat this.”
On the final day of his treatment Caprio received an emotional send off from his doctors and hospital staff.
“It is with extreme excitement that we congratulate you on finishing your treatment here at Miami Cancer Institute,” Doctor Michael Chuong, Caprio’s doctor told the judge. “We look forward to seeing you for many, many more follow-ups to come and excited that hope is alive again and happy days are here again.”
“My treatment’s done. This course is run, and I am on my way,” Caprio said as he excitedly rang the bell to a standing ovation.
“Ringing that bell to me was more symbolic than anything else you could imagine,” he told People. “I’m ringing the bell of happiness. I’m ringing the bell of freedom of cancer. I’m ringing the bell of healing. I’m ringing the bell of giving hope to other people.”
