David Adkins, better known by his stage name Sinbad, suffered a debilitating stroke in October 2020 after a blood clot traveled from his heart to his brain.

“Sinbad is a light source of love and joy for many generations. While he is beginning his road to recovery, we are faithful and optimistic that he will bring laughter into our hearts soon,” his family said in a statement at the time.

Two years later his family issued another statement, this time alongside a photo of Sinbad re-learning how to walk and insight into the comedian’s health.

“Our hearts were devastated,” the family’s statement on a site set up for donations read. “The road to recovery became unclear and extremely difficult for the family to navigate.”

“It would be weeks before he would open his eyes, speak or show signs of basic mobility. It wasn’t long before we realized he couldn’t move his left side or simply hold his head up. The more time passed, the more the family learned how much had been lost.”

Since then Sinbad has spent his time recovering out of the spotlight, and it’s only now that fans have been able to get a peek at how the comedian has been doing since his 2020 stroke.

“Thank you for your prayers, support, and positive thoughts. They’ve carried me this far and will see me through to the finish line. It really is a different world out here!” Sinbad captioned his first Instagram post since November 2022.

The video shows Sinbad watching himself make an appearance alongside the cast of “A Different World” at Morehouse College in Atlanta. He made a virtual appearance, while the cast currently tours historically black colleges and universities.

“Thank you to everybody who’s been praying for me and saying good things and supporting me during this time in my life. It means a lot to me.”

“Some of you are going through what I’m going through or even worse than me,” he said. “I’m reading these things. Imma try and answer as many as I can. I pray for you and I understand what it’s like. It’s rough.”

It’s great to see you, Sinbad! We love you!
