Gregg Popovich, head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, will reportedly be sidelined indefinitely after suffering a health issue before the team’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday.
Mitch Johnson, the Spurs’ assistant coach, is expected to step in for the legendary coach for the time being.
At this time it is unclear what illness the 75-year-old Popovich may be dealing with nor when he will be back on the sidelines.
“He’s not feeling well,” Johnson said. “This has happened before. I think everybody’s just always got to be ready for the next man up. We’ve had it with injuries and sometimes people get sick or don’t feel well or things come up in life. He’s just not feeling well.”
Popovich, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest head coaches of all time, is currently in his 29th season as head coach for the Spurs, earning him the title the longest-tenured head coach in the league.
He leads the NBA in wins with 1,391 career victories, 170 postseason wins, and five NBA titles.
During the 2022-2023 season, it appeared he might be slowing down as the Spurs won only 22 games. However, the following year, they won the draft lottery and picked Victor Wembanyama. The same year, Popovich signed a five-year deal with the team reportedly worth $80 million.
Whatever ailment Gregg Popovich faces, we hope he gets better very soon.
