When it comes to cleaning my house, my mattress is hardly the first thing I think about.
In fact, though I pay meticulous attention to cleaning my bed sheets, cushions and pillows, I can’t remember the last time I gave the mattress a thorough clean.
Which is why I was more than slightly alarmed when I found out just how much filth the mattress can hold.
Fortunately, it wasn’t long after that I was also made aware of a nifty hack that can be applied to getting rid of said filth. It’s fast, effective, and simple, and it will have your mattress looking brand new.
When you consider it, it’s absurd not to apply maximum effort into the maintenance of your mattress. After all, if you sleep eight hours a night, it’s likely you’re spending around one third of your entire life in your bed!
As you can imagine, such usage results in it becoming dirty fast. However, though it’s a matter of course to wash your sheets, it’s easy to forget the mattress underneath.
In just one night your mattress can soak up a lot of sweat. That’s not to mention the dirt, dead skin cells, and dust that filter through and end up in the mattress. Oh, and did someone mention dust mites?
With one simple trick, however, many of the problems can be easily alleviated. All you need is bicarbonate.
Because bicarb contains crystals that are drier than anything else in their surroundings, they help to absorb dirt and moisture from the mattress.
At the same time, said crystals can help with any lingering smells.
How to effectively clean your mattress
1 – The first thing you need to do is get the vacuum cleaner out and give your mattress a proper once over.
2 – Now get the bicarb. Spread it evenly over the entire mattress.
3 – Leave the mattress for a couple of hours. The bicarbonate will disinfect it in this time, killing any bacteria.
4 – Carefully use the vacuum again – this time with a view to removing any remaining bicarb. If you have difficulty getting everything, switch to a smaller nozzle.
5 – Finish with a few drops of essential oil for a fresh scent.
6 – Your mattress should be like new again!
In the clip below, which has accumulated some several million views on YouTube, you can see how bicarb can also be used to clean carpets and other pieces of furniture.
In addition, the video explains the main advantages of using bicarb:
Of course, this isn’t something you need to do as often as washing your sheets.
But every now and then, when you feel like you’d appreciate a fresh mattress, it’s a great hack to have in your back pocket to get rid of dirt, sweat, and other bacteria.
