Billy Ray Cyrus reveals near-fatal diagnosis

Billy Ray Cyrus says he made a “miracle” recovery after a near-fatal battle with sepsis left doctors fearing the worst, but his health struggles were far from over as vocal paralysis later robbed him of his voice.

In 2024, Billy Ray Cyrus was fighting for his life on the same hospital floor where his mother had died just two years earlier, a coincidence the country star says turned an already frightening health crisis into his “worst nightmare.”

Reflecting on the ordeal in a recent interview, the 64-year-old recalled being hospitalized with a severe case of sepsis that left his body “swollen” and prompted doctors to urge him to get his “affairs in order.”

“I don’t know exactly how it evolved. It was my worst nightmare,” Cyrus told People. “Two years before that, my mom had died in that hospital, in the very floor that I was on.”

His mother, Ruth Ann Cyrus, died in 2022 at the age of 85. In an Instagram tribute shared after her death, the country crooner described her as “the definition of love.”

Still grieving the loss of his mother, Cyrus was forced to confront a life-threatening battle of his own.

What is sepsis?

Sepsis is a potentially deadly medical emergency that occurs when the body’s response to an infection spirals out of control.

According to the Mayo Clinic, “Sepsis is a serious condition in which the body responds improperly to an infection. The infection-fighting processes turn on the body, causing the organs to work poorly.”

The condition can develop rapidly and is often difficult to recognize because symptoms –including confusion, rapid breathing, dizziness and chills – vary from person to person.

Without prompt treatment, the clinic writes that “sepsis may progress to septic shock. This is a dramatic drop in blood pressure that can damage the lungs, kidneys, liver and other organs. When the damage is severe, it can lead to death.”

For Cyrus, the diagnosis represented one of the darkest periods of his life.

‘Miracle’ recovery

Despite the severity of his condition, Cyrus says he ultimately made a recovery that even surprised some of the medical professionals treating him.

“I had a prayer answered,” he said, without providing details of his recovery. “That’s a miracle.”

Yet his challenges were not over.

That same year, the “Achy Breaky Heart” singer was also diagnosed with vocal paralysis, creating a new obstacle for a singer whose livelihood depends on his voice.

‘Saved my life’

At one point, Cyrus wasn’t sure whether he would ever sing again. As he struggled to come to terms with his diagnosis and the uncertainty surrounding his future, he found comfort in the people closest to him.

One source of strength came from his daughter Noah, 26, whose music became a constant companion during some of his darkest days.

“Noah’s got that one song, ‘Don’t Put It All on Me,’ that honestly saved my life,” he told People.

The track, written by his 32-year-old son Braison, includes the lyrics: “Some days, we might fall apart / But we’re never broken.”

As Cyrus worked to regain both his health and his voice, those words took on a deeper meaning, serving as a reminder that even in moments when life feels overwhelming, there is still a path forward.

‘Try again’

While Cyrus shared few details about the health crisis itself, he did reveal a simple piece of advice from his grandson Bear, Braison’s 5-year-old son, that changed his perspective.

“In this very broken moment of my life, my little grandson Bear looked at me and said, ‘Try again,’” The singer-songwriter shared, explaining that those two words helped shift his outlook.

“Up until that moment, he had never spoken to me at all. I wasn’t even sure if he knew my name. In that moment I thought, ‘He’s telling you something.’ Is it about love? Music? Somehow, I got to try again at both. So, I’m learning to try again, said Cyrus, who’s been dating actor Elizabeth Hurley for more than one year.

‘Wonderful place where I’m happy’

Now preparing the June 2026 release of “The Hill,” his first album in 14 years, the Grammy-winning artist says he has found a renewed sense of happiness and purpose.

“I’m singing – I’ve been singing every day. I feel so good about my voice,” said Cyrus, who returned to the stage in February 2026 as the “Owl” in The Masked Singer.

He added, “What more could I ask for? I don’t have anything to complain about. I like how everything looks right now. I finally found this wonderful place where I’m happy.”
