‘Bravest little boy in America’: 8-year-old killed while trying to save his mom from violent attack

An Illinois community is mourning the death of an 8-year-old boy who heroically tried to save his mother’s life.

Leland “Lee” Arnett, 8, was killed while trying to save his mother from her allegedly abusive boyfriend. He was beaten to death with a baseball bat inside the family’s home in De Soto, Illinois, on May 13, according to court records obtained by WSIL.

Police responded to the scene after a domestic disturbance call. Both Lee and his mother, Deborah Snider, were transported to the hospital. Lee did not survive.

“This happened because Lee was trying to protect his mother,” Lee’s great-aunt, Anne Donlan Andrew, told The Journal Star.

“That takes a lot to stand up for your mom in a violent situation like that, and he did… I wish he wouldn’t have, but he did.”

His mother remains hospitalized and is still fighting for her life. A GoFundMe has been launched to help the family cover funeral costs and medical bills.

“Leland will be buried in Nebraska, and the transportation and funeral expenses are unfortunately very costly. Any funds received beyond funeral and burial costs will go toward supporting Leland’s siblings and helping with Deborah’s ongoing needs during her recovery,” the page reads.

“Due to the great town of De Soto, we are just about there for paying for the funeral. Whatever amount is left will be sent for the funeral, and the remaining amount will be used to medically transport my sister to Nebraska. This is a massive cost, but a necessary one.

“This tragedy has changed the lives of so many, and we are deeply grateful for any support, prayers, or shares during this incredibly difficult time,” the page reads.

“Lee was a protector”

In his obituary, Lee is remembered for his “big smile,” “sweet eyes,” and the way the little boy “carried joy with him and shared it freely with everyone around him,” according to the Daily Mail.

“He loved with his whole heart and ran full force into every hug, making the people around him feel safe, wanted, and deeply loved,” his obituary continued.

“More than anything, Lee was a protector. Even at such a young age, he stood up for others and defended anyone who needed kindness or care.

“His heart was gentle, brave, and compassionate beyond his years.”

His accused killer, Marcus Moultrie, 36, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty on all charges, according to the Daily Mail. His trial is set to begin on July 6.
