After photos showed Britney Spears leaning out the sunroof of a moving SUV on a busy Los Angeles freeway, the pop star pushed back, insisting the images captured only “two seconds” of her “reality.”
The latest images come during a turbulent year for the 44-year-old pop superstar, who pleaded guilty to a reduced reckless driving charge following a DUI arrest in May.
As part of her plea deal, the mother of two received 12 months of summary probation, one day in jail credited as time served, a $571 fine and was ordered to complete a three-month DUI education program. Spears also agreed to attend regular appointments with both a psychologist and psychiatrist.
Following the plea agreement, her attorney, Michael A. Goldstein, said Spears had taken responsibility for her actions.
“Through her plea today, Britney has accepted responsibility for her conduct. She has taken significant steps to implement positive change, which is clearly reflected in the Ventura County District Attorney’s decision to reduce the charge in this case and dismiss the DUI,” Goldstein said in a statement shared by People.
“Britney appreciates this discretion and is also grateful for the outpouring of support she has received.”
‘Screaming’ and ‘barking’
Only days later, the “Toxic” singer found herself at the center of public attention after she was reportedly spotted “screaming,” “barking” and walking through a restaurant while holding a knife during a visit to Blue Dog Tavern in Sherman Oaks.
“I am having dinner next to Britney Spears right now and it’s a WILD experience,” entertainment reporter Jeff Schneider posted on X.
Minutes later, after Spears had left, he added: “She just left and everyone in the restaurant turned and started talking about it. An INSANE dining experience. One diner feared for her life. This is not a joke…”
The signer’s representative swiftly pushed back, telling People the reports had been grossly exaggerated.
“Britney was enjoying a quiet dinner with her assistant and bodyguard,” the rep told the outlet, adding the reports were “completely blown out of proportion.”
“She was simply telling the story about how her dog was barking at the neighbors. At no point did she put anyone in danger with a knife. She was cutting her hamburger in half.”
“This constant attack on everything that she does, and this is exactly what happened 20 years ago when the media tried to depict Britney as a bad person. This is ridiculous, and it needs to stop now,” her spokesperson continued.
Latest freeway incident
That scrutiny followed the “Baby One More Time” singer onto the freeway on July 8, when photographers captured her leaning out from the sunroof of a black Mercedes SUV traveling along the 101 Freeway near Studio City.
Photos published by TMZ and the Daily Mail showed Spears stretching both arms across the roof of the vehicle and leaning back as traffic moved at speeds reported to be around 45 mph.
According to the outlet, Spears remained standing through the sunroof for about two minutes before the SUV – reportedly driven by a man wearing a cowboy hat and sunglasses – exited the freeway.
An anonymous source later told the Daily Mail there was a simple explanation for what happened.
“Britney just went through the sunroof for a quick moment, she wanted to see what the traffic was about up ahead because the cars came to a stop. She wanted to see how long they would be delayed,” the source said, explaining that the “Oops I did it Again” singer had often done the same thing as a child.
“She used to do this all the time as a kid growing up in the South, she loves having the warm wind blow through her hair in the summer, it’s fun. She is having a fun summer and is happy, she is in a good place. If it’s illegal to put your head through a sunroof, she doesn’t know it! She didn’t mean to do anything bad.”
‘Nothing is what it seems’
After days of headlines and online speculation, Spears broke her silence with a candid Instagram post on July 11.
“What people see is two seconds of insanity of me arching me to the lords !!!!! yet the days and hours of my reality !!!!!! Nothing is what it seems,” she wrote alongside a photo showing her leaning back through the sunroof of the black SUV.
“Psss I think I need to come out of the roof quite a bit more,” she added.
