One of the highlights of Donald Trump and Melania Trump’s UK state visit was surely the royal banquet. The president, a long-time royal fan, got to give a speech, and even had the future queen, Kate Middleton, to his right at the table. But did Trump understand that it wasn’t the Queen? Well, some Royal Fans believe that was the case.
Donald Trump has always been a huge fan of the Royal Family. As he stepped down in the UK last week, he became the first president in history to receive a second state visit. This time, he was welcomed by King Charles, and on Wednesday night, he was honored to attend a state banquet.
But it didn’t go through without some controversy. First, Melania Trump was criticized for what she was wearing, and then, a body language expert concluded that Kate Middleton, who was sitting next to Donald, possibly set him straight.
According to body language specialist Bruce Durham, it may even have gone so far that Kate won over the American president.
“Look how regal she looks, how straight she looks – and [she’s] looking at Donald Trump like a childish, impish-type comment has been made,” Durham told the Mirror.
He added: “This is important because when is Donald Trump never the alpha? So there is something going on here in that either Kate has an effect on him, or there is a narrative in his head which results in him raising his shoulders, retracting his head, with Kate the alpha, Donald the beta.”
Did Donald Trump confuse Kate Middleton with Queen Camilla?
Donald also showered Kate with praise during the state visit. It was the Princess of Wales and Prince William who first greeted the President and First Lady of the United States as they stepped out of Marine One to meet the Royal Family.
Trump disembarked Marine One and walked up to greet William first, and then Kate. According to Jeremy Freeman, the President of the United States told the Princess of Wales, “You’re so beautiful, so,” per Mirror.
During his speech at the state banquet, Trump continued to praise Kate, saying, “To see Her Royal Highness, Princess Catherine, so radiant and so healthy, and so beautiful. It’s really a great honour, thank you.
But was Donald Trump aware that Kate Middleton was “only” a princess, and not a queen yet? At one point during his speech, which was caught by some royal watchers online, according to Marie Claire, the president appeared to make a mistake.
Trump praised King Charles
In a clip from the fancy dinner, Donald Trump seemed to confuse Kate Middleton and Queen Camilla. As he said thank you to the “queen”, describing her as “very, very special,” Trump looked at Kate. Royal fans online, as reported by Marie Claire, questioned whether the president had confused the two.
On the other side of Trump sat King Charles. The two spent plenty of time together, and one lip-reader managed to reveal what the president told the monarch when the mic was off.
Lip reader Jeremy Freeman claimed that Trump chose to express his admiration for the king before the speeches were given.
“It’s so incredible, it’s what you do so well,” the president told King Charles, Freeman told the Mirror.
