Doctor, 30, dies 7 months after cancer diagnosis

Dr. Rebecca Jane Brown, 30, spent her life caring for cancer patients with compassion and dedication — but fate dealt her a cruel hand when she was diagnosed with the same disease she had been fighting in others.

Becca, born in Britain but spending the first eight years of her childhood in the United States, had returned to the UK to train in oncology.

She was entering her second year of training when she noticed an unusual symptom that most might have dismissed. One night in June 2023, after a night out, she realized she couldn’t go to the toilet.

Rushing to the emergency room at the very hospital where she worked in Poole, a seaside town in southern England, Becca underwent initial checks. But it wasn’t until days later, after swelling appeared in her abdomen, that she was sent for further tests.

“She noticed that her tummy was distended for a few days afterwards,” her sister Sophie recalled in a video for Stand Up To Cancer.

A scan revealed a large ovarian cyst measuring about 5.5 inches, which was removed — but her symptoms didn’t disappear.

Her mother, Monica, recalled: “The early signs didn’t seem ‘ominous,’” while her father Martin added, “I think she knew things still weren’t right.”

Another surgery followed, but the devastating diagnosis soon arrived: Becca had a rare, aggressive form of ovarian cancer that had already spread to her breasts, lungs, and lymph nodes.

She was later moved to the very oncology ward she had once been a part of. Sophie said, “The ward she was on, being looked after, she’d worked with them. They were her colleagues. They were the carers, she’s been on the other side of that.”

Even in the face of this devastating news, Becca’s spirit never wavered. Her mother remembered, “Our nickname for Becca, as a small baby, was Smiler,” with her father adding, “People I don’t think ever saw Becca not smiling.”

There was hope after her first round of chemotherapy, but it faded when swelling in her stomach led to the discovery that the cancer had reached her bowel.

With no options left, Becca spent her final days surrounded by family, passing away just seven months after her first symptom. Her mother said poignantly, “She lay into my shoulder. When she came into this world, I held her, and as she left this world, I held her too.”

Becca’s life was short, but her dedication, warmth, and courage left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
