Kindergarten teacher Sonya Romero begins her day at Lew Wallace Elementary in Albuquerque, New Mexico in a remarkable way. She asks her students whether they’ve eaten, if they need any clothes, and if they need to brush their teeth or comb their hair. And while Sonya is always there to make sure her students have everything they need, it’s what she did for two of her former students that caught the attention of Ellen Degeneres. But Ellen has a surprise in store for her. This made me tear up!
Recently, two of Sonya Romero’s former students needed an emergency place to stay for the weekend, and without hesitation, Sonya volunteered to take them in. And when that weekend turned into the indefinite future, Sonya signed on to be their foster mom.
When Ellen found out, she brought Sonya on her show to thank her for her kindness. The talk show host showed the audience a video of teachers, students, and staff of the Lew Wallace Elementary School talking about Sonya’s incredible dedication to her students. And the video left both Sonya and Ellen in tears.
But the the appreciation didn’t end there. Ellen also wanted to make an impact on the lives of Sonya and her foster children, so she also gave the teacher two $10,000 checks— one for Sonya and one for Lew Wallace Elementary School.
It’s a fitting tribute to an amazing teacher, and when you the video Ellen put together, you’ll realize the power of teachers to effect their community. Watch the heartwarming video below!
