Disturbing bodycam footage shows six-year-old threatening police after shooting teacher at school

The haunting moment when police officers arrived at a school where a 6-year-old boy had used a gun to shoot his teacher has been made public. When officers walked into the room, the boy stayed quiet.

Newly released body camera footage is giving a closer look at the terrifying moments after a 6-year-old student shot his teacher inside a Virginia elementary school classroom.

The shooting happened on January 6, 2023, at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia. The newly released footage shows police rushing into the classroom moments after the first-grade student shot teacher Abby Zwerner.

The bullet went through Zwerner’s hand before becoming lodged in her chest. Miraculously, Zwerner survived the attack. The body camera footage was later used as evidence in Zwerner’s civil lawsuit against former assistant principal Ebony Parker.

Parker was accused of failing to act after receiving multiple reports that the child had a gun at school. In 2024, she was charged with eight counts of felony child abuse and disregard for life; it was one for each bullet in the gun the student used.

Prosecutors stated she committed “a willful act or omission in the care of such students, in a manner so gross, wanton and culpable as to show a reckless disregard for human life,” per court documents, CNN reported.

Now, newly released haunting footage is shedding more light on what happened The boy was still in the first-grade classroom in the moments after the shooting, with Amy Kovac, a reading specialist at the school, holding him. He is heard shouting profanity and vulgarities at the officers and at Kovac.

“The gun is there,” Kovac told officers on the scene. “He just admitted he had one bullet.”

At the time, there were several other bullets in the jammed handgun at the time.

“Both of y’all want a [expletive] piece of me…” the boy asked.

Kovac then explained that the boy had gun residue on his hand. The six-year-old then told officers how he obtained the weapon.

“My mom had that. I stole that from my mom,” the boy said. “I don’t care if you call backup, I don’t care if I go to jail.”

The child then appeared to hit Kovac, with officers calmly walked him out of the classroom.

Zwerner was awarded $10 million in the case against the school’s former assistant principal, Parker. A separate criminal case was dismissed earlier this year.
