For most Americans, Donald Trump is a familiar face: the current president, former reality TV star and businessman who has spent decades in the public eye. But according to his granddaughter, life with him away from the cameras can look surprisingly ordinary.
Kai Trump, 19, recently opened up about her relationship with her grandfather, offering a glimpse into what family time with the president is like behind closed doors.
“He’s just like a normal grandpa. That’s what I call him, grandpa. And sitting down at dinner with him, we just talk like normal people,” she said while speaking on NewsNation’s Katie Pavlich Tonight, according to UNILAD.
Kai is the eldest child of Donald Trump Jr. and his ex-wife, Vanessa Haydon, making her Donald Trump’s eldest grandchild.
“It’s very normal”
Golf is one of the things she and her grandfather have in common, and it is apparently a regular topic when the two spend time together.
“Like if you spoke to your grandpa or a family member, it’s just, it’s very normal. And we talk about golf because we have that in common. We talk about a lot of other things. He loves sports. I love sports. And it’s just like having a normal dinner with your family member.”
The two also play golf together, although Kai says her grandfather doesn’t exactly make it easy for her.
“He’s a great golfer,” she said. “When we’re playing with each other, even if we’re on the same team, he still tries to get into my head.”
Kai said being challenged in that way has helped her keep other people out of her head.
Still, there is one major difference between Kai’s life and that of most 19-year-olds: security.
Donald Trump’s granddaughter Kai
Because she is the president’s granddaughter, Kai has armed guards accompanying her when she is out. She previously discussed what that experience is like during an appearance on Logan Paul’s podcast Impaulsive in January 2026.
“It’s a little weird,” she said. “I try my best not to let it bother me. Especially the past year, since he’s become president, I’ve had to learn that, yes, they’re following me, but also to focus on pretending that they’re not there.
“Obviously, they are there. But if you can try to not really focus on that and enjoy your time with your friends, your family, or whatever it is, it makes it easier.”
Kai has spoken publicly about her grandfather before.
During a speech supporting his presidential candidacy at the 2024 Republican National Convention, she described Trump as “an inspiration.”
For Kai, however, her relationship with him appears to extend well beyond his role as president or public figure. When they’re together as a family, she says, he’s simply her grandpa.
