The Las Vegas City Council unanimously approved a month-long program allowing those who receive a parking ticket to pay their fine in school supplies.
The donated school supplies will benefit the Teachers Exchange, a nonprofit associated with the Public Education Foundation, according to a press release.
Drivers who receive parking infractions between June 19 and July 19 are eligible to participate in the plan. In order to pay their fine with donated school supplies, drivers must donate “new, unwrapped school supplies of equal or greater value” and provide a receipt.
Drivers have 30 days within their citation date to donate supplies.
Some supplies that will be accepted are: pencils, pens, erasers, index cards, storage bins, rulers, pencil sharpers, and Post-it notes.
According to the press release, only those with non-public safety citations are eligible to participate in the program.
This isn’t the first time the city has offered drivers an alternative way to pay their parking fines. In July 2016, the city council adopted an ordinance allowing similar programs to happen on occasion.
This is such an awesome idea!
It gives back to the community. I hope similar programs are implemented in more cities across the country.
