Man accidentally captures a one-in-a-million photo – but only realizes days later

What looked like an ordinary landscape photo turned into an extraordinary shot after the photographer noticed something unusual on a distant cliff.

Gavin Best’s photograph of Belfast, Northern Ireland, included a detail so perfectly timed that some people questioned whether it was even real.

Best was hiking near Cavehill when he took the picture and had no idea a stranger in the distance would become the photograph’s most remarkable feature.

Only when he examined the image more closely did he notice what he had captured.

Why people thought the image was fake

Far across the landscape, a man appeared to be floating in midair above a cliff. His body was positioned in what looked like an impressive star jump, creating a silhouette against the scenery.

Although Best and the unidentified man were separated by a considerable distance, the jump appeared perfectly positioned within the frame.

When the photograph began attracting attention online, some viewers struggled to believe that the moment had been captured by chance, according to VT.

Some people wondered whether the image had been digitally altered or carefully staged.

Best shared the image on X in 2018, writing:  “Took this photo a few days ago. Just spotted something in the distance and zoomed in. How’s that for coincidental timing?”

The photo sparked fears of a dangerous fall

The image also prompted a more serious reaction from some viewers. Because the man appeared to be jumping near the edge of a cliff, people worried that the photograph might show someone making a potentially fatal leap.

Best addressed those concerns and explained that he had spotted a group of people on the cliff just minutes after taking the picture.

Best’s experience reminds us that some of the most memorable photographs aren’t carefully planned. A person can set out to capture a landscape and end up documenting an entirely unexpected moment instead.
