In a world where size is often tied to identity and masculinity, one man has decided to speak publicly about something most people would never dare to admit…
Michael Phillips, 36, from North Carolina, has lived with a condition known as micropenis – a medical term used to describe a penis that measures at least 2.5 standard deviations below the average size.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, the condition is exceptionally rare, affecting just 0.6% of the global population. In the U.S, it’s diagnosed in roughly 1.5 out of every 10,000 newborns, making it one of the rarest in male genital development.
Less than one inch
Per Healthline, the average erect penis is about 5.16 inches (13.1 cm), with the average flaccid length around 3.61 inches (9.17 cm).
Phillips says his measures under one inch – placing him far below medical norms and leaving him unable to engage in penetrative sex at all.
“I went to the doctor with concerns over my penis size,” he told the Sun. “I was informed there is a condition called a micropenis. The main reason I went to the doctor was because my penis is actually too small to have sex at all.”
‘Not a slang joke term’
In his interview with IGV, Phillips reflected on what he believes to be one of the biggest public misunderstandings. “I think the biggest misconception is that if a guy has a small penis, he just has a small penis, and not that there may be a medical thing going on. More people need to be aware that there is a medical condition called micropenis,” he said, urging people to realize that it’s “not a slang joke term.”
He also admitted that he’s still coming to terms with it. “I’m still not sure that I have yet fully come to terms with having a micropenis,” he shared.
‘Embarassing’
While the diagnosis was recent, Phillips’ awareness of the issue began much earlier. He recalls a painful moment in high school when he revealed himself to a girl for the first time – and she laughed. That moment stayed with him, quietly reshaping his entire approach to intimacy, dating, and relationships.
“I have had a couple experiences of having sex and wasn’t able to get it in and everything,” Phillips – still a virgin – told The Sun. “From there I just stopped trying to date and lost interest in it.”
Over time, the emotional weight of the condition compounded. “It impacted relationships in the sense that while there may be women out there totally accepting and wouldn’t mind, the process you have to go through and many times you have to explain your situation to new women has left me just avoiding them,” he admitted in an interview with IGV, adding that it’s an “embarrassing” topic.
‘On my mind all day’
Even outside of romantic life, Phillips says the condition affects him on a daily basis. “You have to see it every time you go to the bathroom,” he said. “With this condition, going to the bathroom is even more challenging. I can’t stand to pee, I have to sit down. It makes it difficult when you’re out in public.”
“I had tickets to an NFL game, but you go to a restroom and it is just urinals lined up that I can’t use,” he told the Sun.
He also shared the mental toll: “It’s on my mind all day,” he said, noting that reminders of the condition are unavoidable and constant.
Little to gain from surgery
Though surgical options do exist, they offer limited outcomes, and Phillips remains uncertain whether they’re worth pursuing. “There are some surgeries, but they would only be able to add about an inch, inch-and-a-half,” he explained. “I’m thinking about it, but if that’s all that I would be able to gain then I would still be within the spectrum of a micropenis, so I’m not sure if it would be worth it.”
In August 2024, Phillips shared an Instagram post announcing that he decided to go through with the procedure.
“Getting ready to go in to have penile enlargement surgery for my Micropenis condition,” he wrote in the post alongside an image of him waiting in hospital. “I’ve wanted to do this for the longest because everyone knows how horrible being so small can be.”
‘Choose to be happy’
While he hasn’t offered an update on the success of his surgery, Phillips said that he’s learning to be happy with what he has: “I’ve learned that struggling does nothing but hurt you and nobody else,” he told IGV.
“You can choose to be happy just being here in this great world we live in. Find people you are confident in sharing your problem with, and they might surprise you with how understanding and accepting they are,” he added.
