Marjorie Taylor Greene tells women to not have sex if they don’t want abortions

Republican Majorie Taylor Greene has once again stoked the fires of controversy after telling women they should just abstain from sex if they want to avoid abortions.

Greene, a Congresswoman from Georgia, was speaking at an anti-abortion rally, whereafter she tweeted the caption: “The greatest choice a woman can make is becoming a mother.”

Naturally, the internet was quick to focus on the incredible irony of describing the act of creating a child as a “choice”, whilst at the same time being fervently against the pro-choice movement.

In the not-so-distant past, Greene has also used her voice and social media platforms to push the agendas of far-right conspiracy theories spouted by the likes of QAnon. During the COVID-19 pandemic, meanwhile, she openly compared the Democrats handling of the virus and its toll on the American people to the persecution of the Jews at the hands of the Nazis.

In the midst of the ongoing debate over abortion in the US – one that has raged since it became apparent there were behind-the-scenes plans to overturn the historic Roe v. Wade ruling of 1973 – Greene took to the stage at an anti-abortion rally, telling the crowd:

“Women need to make better choices.

“If we want to be women who make choices, here’s one thing you can choose. If you don’t want to become pregnant right now, choose to not have sex.

“You can always abstain.”

The controversial 47-year-old went on to claim that abortion was never the right decision, insisting that God would help those who chose to keep their baby instead of terminating it.

“Let me tell you what a woman’s choice is,” she said.

“To be a mother. That is the greatest choice a woman can ever make … Here’s what I want to encourage women to understand and know.”

She later added: “If you accidentally get pregnant, let me tell you something, that abortion you’re considering having, is not going to solve your problems.

“It’s not going to make that boyfriend of yours or that guy love you … It’s not going to help you pursue a career that you think you want to pursue. It’s not going to help you finish college.”

In a typically hypocritical, not-at-all-thought-out gesture, Greene then voted against a bill to provide emergency funding to address America’s current shortage of baby formula.

According to a tweet by Brian Tyler Cohen, there were only nine NO votes to the bill – all of them were given by Republicans.

The new bill, known as the Formula Supplemental Appropriations Act, was thankfully passed, and $28 million in emergency spending was provided.

What do you think to the abortion debate? Should women have complete control over their own bodies? Or should the state effectively be able to decide if they’re forced to deliver babies or not?
