Just days after vacating his post at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Elon Musk slammed Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” which the technocrat slammed as “a disgusting abomination” in a scathing online tirade that’s shaken Capitol Hill.
Once hailed as President Trump’s unofficial right hand in bureaucratic reform, the Tesla CEO is wasting no time distancing himself from the administration’s newest fiscal Frankenstein, the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” that according to the White House is “a bold step toward revitalizing the U.S. economy.”
Passed by a single vote by the House of Representatives on May 22, the controversial bill was pitched as a populist push for working-class Americans. It includes temporary tax breaks through 2028, like the elimination of taxes on tips for service and beauty workers and a pause on overtime tax penalties. The bill also re-allocates billions toward military spending and expanded border security.
The bill is not exactly what Musk would call “efficiency.”
‘Disappointed’
Speaking with CBS Sunday Morning in late May, the SpaceX founder said he was “disappointed to see the massive spending bill” because it increases the budget deficit and undermines DOGE.
“I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful. But I don’t know if it can be both,” Musk said only days before he wrapped up his role in the government, placing him squarely at odds with Trump, who has hailed the sweeping spending package as a major win.
Slashing support
Among the bill’s more divisive elements: the slashing of Medicaid and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to balance lost tax revenue, cuts to undocumented immigrant healthcare access, and restrictions on gender transition support services. The Congressional Budget Office estimates 8.6 million people could lose healthcare coverage.
“We will take a massive step to balancing our Budget by enacting the largest mandatory Spending Cut, EVER, and Americans will get to keep more of their money with the largest Tax Cut, EVER, and no longer taxing Tips, Overtime, or Social Security for Seniors,” Trump boasted in a Truth Social post, shared on X, on June 2. “It will kick millions of Illegals off Medicaid and make sure SNAP is focused on Americans ONLY!”
Personal attack?
Insiders suggest that Musk’s objection of the bill is more personal. Reports indicate that the bill strips electric vehicle tax credits – an obvious gut-punch to Tesla.
In the President’s June 2 social media post, he also wrote: “It will also restore Choice and Affordability for Car purchases by REPEALING [Joe] Biden’s EV Mandate, and all of the GREEN NEW SCAM Tax Credits and Spending.”
‘America First in Space’
And there’s more: The Federal Aviation Administration has reportedly chosen to sideline Musk’s Starlink satellites for future air traffic projects.
while Trump allegedly yanked Musk ally Jared Isaacman from NASA’s leadership shortlist over past Democratic donations.
“After a thorough review of prior associations, I am hereby withdrawing the nomination of Jared Isaacman to head NASA,” Trump wrote in A May 31 post on Truth Social, per Associated Press. “I will soon announce a new Nominee who will be Mission aligned, and put America First in Space.”
‘Disgusting abomination’
Over the next several days, Musk publicly voiced his dissatisfaction, shaming supporters of the bill and calling it a “disgusting abomination.”
“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore,” he ranted in a June 3 post on X. “This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”
But he wasn’t quite done.
“It will massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden America citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt,” he thundered in a follow-up post. “Congress is making America bankrupt,” he added in a third tweet.
White House comments
His fiery statement raised eyebrows and captured the attention White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who didn’t seem fazed by Musk’s verbal napalm.
“The president already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill,” she said in a news conference. “It doesn’t change his opinion.”
A powerfully passive-aggressive brush-off, to be sure. But Musk’s words are now trending, and the internet is watching.
Musk’s takedown of Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill’” marks a dramatic shift from staunch ally to outspoken critic. With his X platform already a megaphone for political dissent, his fiery exit could be the start of a new phase in his ever-evolving role in American politics.
This isn’t just about a bill. It’s about a billionaire who once played the government’s game –and now wants to change the rules.
