No evidence of hate crime in fatal stabbing of Detroit Jewish community leader, police say

On Sunday, Detroit police provided an update on the fatal stabbing of Samantha Woll, a well-known Jewish community leader.

“No evidence has surfaced suggesting that this crime was motivated by antisemitism,” Detroit Police Chief James White said, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Woll, 40, was killed outside her home in Lafayette Park, Michigan Saturday morning.

She was the president of the Isaac Agree Downtown Detroit Synagogue.

Woll’s synagogue confirmed her death Saturday via a statement on Facebook.

“We are shocked and saddened to learn of the unexpected death of Samantha Woll, our Board President. At this point we do not have more information, but will share more when it becomes available. May her memory be a blessing.”

Officers were called Saturday morning about an unresponsive person lying on the ground. When they arrived they found Woll, a community and political activist, and a “trail of blood” leading to her house.

According to CNN, police believe the attack took place inside Woll’s home.

During the initial stages of the investigation, White urged the public not to jump to any conclusions.

“Understandably, this crime leaves many unanswered questions,” White said. “This matter is under investigation, and I am asking that everyone remain patient while investigators carefully examine every aspect of the available evidence.”

In 2022, FBI data shows a near seven percent increase in hate crimes. While it is still unclear if the “mass ethnic cleansing” occurring in Palestine has led to an increase in hate crimes in the United States, the Metropolitan police say there has been a 1,350 percent increase in antisemitic crime in the UK.

In the U.S. a Palestinian-American boy was brutally stabbed to death inside his own home.

“She was endlessly positive, just a wonderful person who was doing so much good and could bring so much happiness and joy,” state Sen. Stephanie Chang said. “She did not deserve this.”

The FBI and Michigan State Police are both involved in the investigation into her murder.
