An Ohio father who discovered a video allegedly showing a 20-year-old man sexually assaulting his 11-year-old daughter took justice into his own hands. He posed as his child online to lure the alleged attacker back to their home before shooting him twice.
Malik Chandler, 31, from Grove City, Ohio, learned of the alleged assault on July 15 when his daughter’s mother found the video.
The following day, Chandler used his daughter’s phone to contact her alleged attacker Diego Montoya Gonzalez via TikTok, impersonating her to draw him back to the family home.
Chandler told police his original plan was to hold Gonzalez and beat him up while he waited for police to arrive. That plan changed when Gonzalez allegedly reached for a gun in his pocket and Chandler shot him twice.
Both men were charged
Officers arrived to find Gonzalez sitting in a chair with two gunshot wounds. He was taken to Grant Medical Center in Columbus and treated for non-fatal injuries.
Chandler was charged with felony assault and his bond was set at $100,000. He has previously been charged with strangling his girlfriend until she lost consciousness in 2021. The case was later dismissed.
In 2017 he was convicted of attempted breaking and entering, a misdemeanor in Ohio, meaning he was still legally permitted to carry a firearm at the time of the shooting.
Gonzalez did not escape consequences either. A grand jury indicted him on five counts of pandering sexually oriented material, two counts of rape and one count of obstruction of official business.
Prosecutors said multiple videos of children being sexually abused were found on his phone, including footage involving an infant or toddler.
When Gonzalez is eventually released from prison he will be banned from contacting the victim or her family and will be prohibited from using the internet for anything outside of work.
