Paul Reubens’ official cause of death has been revealed a little over a month after the late actor died at age 70.
According to his death certificate, which was obtained by People, the Pee-wee Herman actor’s immediate cause of death was listed as acute hypoxic respiratory failure.
It was only revealed upon his death that Reubens had been suffering from cancer for the past several years. The death certificate confirmed he had been living with two types: acute myelogenous leukemia and metastatic lung cancer.
Acute myelogenous leukemia was listed as the sequential underlying cause of death.
Reubens, who was best known for playing Pee-wee Herman died on July 30 at the age of 70.
“Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years. I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans, and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you,” a posthumous statement read on his social media accounts.
“Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness,” a caption accompanying the post said.
“Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.”
