Tina Turner passed away on Wednesday, 24 May 2023. The singer passed away in her sleep at her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland. In the last years of her life, the singer lived a quiet life in Europe, not stepping out much.
In fact, it had been some time since the singer last stepped out. It was in 2019 for the premier of the Broadway bio-musical, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York City that she made a public appearance.
“This musical is my life, but it’s like poison that turned into medicine,” the singer said to the crowd, which included celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Tiffany Haddish, during a surprise appearance she made at curtain call. “I can never be as happy as I am now.”
She praised the leading actress Adrienne Warren, saying, “Thank God for her.”
The musical showcased her humble beginnings in Nutbush, Tennessee and how she made it as a global superstar who defied age, race, and gender in her pursuit of stardom. The show debuted at West End in 2018 before it found its way to Broadway in 2019.
The show celebrated its five-year run anniversary earlier this year, an occasion which the singer marked. She wrote on Instagram, “Sending so much love to @tinathemusical,” she wrote in April. “Proud of our wonderful show, and thrilled that we’re celebrating 5 years in the West End – long may it continue!”
While her last appearance was in 2019, one of the the singer’s last posts on Instagram came in March 2021. In the post, she was promoting TINA, the Max documentary about her life.
“I am so excited to share this movie with you — seeing the concert scenes made me relive some of the proudest moments of my life,” she wrote in the caption. Adding, “I simply had to sing along and dance around my living room!”
Even till the end, it seems she was filled with life and laughter. The singer was known for her infectiously sunny persona which put everyone around her in a good mood as well.
The singer’s death was confirmed in an Instagram post by her management. The post read, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner. With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow,” the statement read. “Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly.”
