Once a teenage heartthrob in the wizarding world, Stanislav Yanevski made a memorable impression in the fourth Harry Potter film as Viktor Krum – the brooding, broomstick-wielding Quidditch star from Durmstrang Institute.
Now, 20 years after Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire debuted, Yanevski is now 40 and living a very different life from the one fans remember onscreen.
Stanislav Yanevski’s entry into the world of acting came by chance rather than design. Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, he wasn’t pursuing a performance career when he was cast in one of the most globally successful film franchises of all time.
In fact, he wasn’t even auditioning.
‘No real expectations’
“It happened by accident, I was found,” Yanevski explained in a 2005 interview of when he was discovered at England’s Mill Hill boarding school.
“I was late for registering for my college where I studied and while I was trying to explain why I had been late when I met Fiona Weir, one of the casting directors of the movie, and she noticed me and invited me for a casting the same afternoon.
“I went and they tested me for about half an hour. We talked about the movie and about Bulgaria a lot. Afterwards I received a callback for two more casting sessions, but I couldn’t attend neither because I had exams (SIC).”
Despite missing several callbacks due to exams, Yanevski eventually met with director Mike Newell and secured the role. “I had no real expectations. However, I received a call, and not a very nice one, because they were mad at me for not showing up. I went to see them again and I met Mike [Newell] and got the part,” he recalled.
Playing Viktor Krum
Yanevski’s role as Viktor Krum marked his film debut. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), Krum appears as the Bulgarian champion in the dangerous Triwizard Tournament.
“I am most proud of the fact that there is a Bulgarian presence in the movie. Also Viktor Krum is the best quidditch player in Harry Potter’s world, which is also something to be proud of,” he said in the interview of his character, who represented the Durmstrang Institute in the magical competition.
In a recent Instagram Live with Cameo Harry Potter, the actor opened up about his time on set and revealed the most grueling scene he filmed – and it wasn’t the high-speed Quidditch matches.
Yanevski named the Triwizard Tournament’s underwater challenge as the toughest to shoot. “That was filmed mostly underwater,” he admitted, shedding light on the physically demanding and logistically complex nature of the scene that required special training and a diver’s certificate.
He joked: “I do turn into a shark, which is a natural thing for me when I enter water, but yeah… that was difficult…You cannot see, you cannot breathe, you can panic easily.”
Relationship with Hermione
Although he was a fierce competitor, Krum’s most memorable scenes for many fans involve his budding romance with Hermione Granger, played by Emma Watson.
As Hermione’s date to the Yule Ball, Krum became a source of tension between Hermione and Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint), further developing key character dynamics within the series. Despite limited screen time, Yanevski’s stoic charm and striking presence left a lasting impression on fans.
Life After Hogwarts
“Naturally, after having tasted the movie world, I would like to continue and build a career in the field. I like it a lot and I think it is very important to love your job,” he said in the 2005 interview. “Since I enjoy making movies I would like to continue forward.”
But, following his stint in Harry Potter, Yanevski’s acting career remained relatively low-key. He appeared in a handful of projects, including the 2007 horror film Hostel: Part II, 2019’s The Cloaking, and the 2021 action thriller Last Man Down, which remains his most recent acting credit according to IMDb.
While he hasn’t achieved an equal level of fame as some of the other stars from the franchise, Yanevski has maintained a public presence, particularly through social media, where he offers followers a glimpse into his active lifestyle.

He frequently shares photos and videos related to fitness, travel, and events, often engaging with Harry Potter fans worldwide.
Physically, Yanevski has undergone a noticeable transformation. Once lean and youthful on screen, he now sports a muscular, heavily built physique and often appears with a well-groomed beard – a look quite distant from the clean-shaven teen heartthrob of 2005.
With Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire celebrating its 20th anniversary, many fans are looking back on the cast and wondering where the years have taken them. For Stanislav Yanevski, the journey has been low-profile but impactful – a blend of fitness, fandom, and the occasional reminder that once you enter the wizarding world, you’re never truly out of it.
