A mother-of-two has opened up about the subtle warning signs she dismissed before experiencing a heart attack, hoping to raise awareness for others who may overlook the same symptoms.
Nikki, a TikToker and content creator, runs a family-focused account with her husband, Marty. In her video, the 46-year-old from Houston shared the shocking news of her heart attack, explaining that she initially brushed off her symptoms as signs of perimenopause.
Believing it was nothing serious, she ignored her discomfort for nearly a week—until the medical emergency struck.
It All Started With Shoulder Pain
In a viral TikTok video, which has now amassed over 7.7 million views, Nikki recalled how her symptoms began with a sore left shoulder.
“It felt like I had just slept on it wrong,” she said. “I thought it might be a frozen shoulder from perimenopause.”
The day before her heart attack, she woke up again with shoulder pain and a wave of nausea, though the feeling passed within 15 minutes. She didn’t think much of it—until the symptoms returned the next morning.

Believing it was the same minor discomfort, she made a coffee and sat down, only to suddenly feel her chest tighten. A sharp pain radiated from her shoulder down her arm—one of the classic warning signs of a heart attack.
“At that point, I stopped my husband and told him, ‘Don’t go to work yet. I’m really not feeling well. I’m going to jump in the shower and see if that helps,’” Nikki explained.
She did feel a little better after the shower and had a routine doctor’s appointment scheduled that morning for an unrelated issue. While there, she mentioned what had happened.
The doctor advised her to go straight to the emergency room if the symptoms returned. Since she wasn’t experiencing any issues at that moment, they told her there likely wouldn’t be anything to detect just yet.
The Symptoms Returned—and This Time, She Knew It Was Serious
Less than an hour after leaving the doctor’s office, the symptoms came back—stronger than before.
“The arm pain was radiating all the way down. My chest felt like it was being squeezed as tight as you could squeeze it. I started to feel sick again,” Nikki said.
Realizing the urgency of the situation, she quickly texted her husband, letting him know she was near the emergency room and heading straight there.
Somehow, she managed to drive herself to the hospital, walked up to the counter, and demanded immediate attention.
“I told them, ‘Somebody needs to check my heart right this second,’” she recalled.
At that moment, a male nurse spotted her and immediately stepped in.
“He peeked around the corner, saw me, and saved my life,” Nikki said. “He waved me back, and within seconds, they confirmed I was having a heart attack.”
Recovery and a Shocking Diagnosis
Since posting the video, Nikki has reassured her followers that she is now recovering well. However, the cause of her heart attack remained a mystery at first—she had no prior health conditions, no artery blockages, and no signs of heart disease.
A visit to The Texas Heart Institute finally provided answers. Specialists determined that her heart attack was triggered by a “perfect storm” of perimenopause and illness occurring at the same time, though there was no genetic link or underlying heart condition.
Despite her recovery, follow-up scans suggest there may be some lasting damage to her heart, and further tests are needed to assess the extent.
Recognizing the Warning Signs
Nikki’s story serves as a reminder that heart attack symptoms can be subtle and easily mistaken for other conditions—especially in women.
According to the NHS, common heart attack symptoms include:
- Chest pain or tightness
- Pain radiating down the arms, back, neck, or jaw
- Nausea or vomiting
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Sweating
- A sense of overwhelming anxiety
Nikki hopes her experience will encourage others to take unusual symptoms seriously and seek medical attention if something feels off.
