Woman given 3 days to live at birth graduates from college with honors

When Nekhidia Harris was born, doctors gave her three days to live.

The little girl came into the world with multiple physical disabilities and got the worst possible start in life.

But Nekhidia would soon show the whole world that setbacks and bad odds could be defeated.

This week, the 24-year-old graduated from Medgar Evers College with honors, according to ABC7.

When Nekhidia Harris saw the light of day for the first time, almost 25 years ago, her parents received devastating news.

The doctors explained that their little girl would only live for three days. But the experts were wrong – nothing could break Nekhidia.

The now 24-year-old is about the size of a toddler, but she makes a big impression on everyone who meets her.

“She lights up a room,” Dasline Harris, Nekhidia’s mom, told ABC7.

“No matter what darkness is in the room, she lights up that room.”

Nekhidia was born with weak bones and several other health issues. During her life she visited the hospital more times than she probably can count.

Her condition required multiple surgeries over the years.

”Nikki”  is also one of the creators behind the Brooklyn-based Harris Family Vision Foundation.

The foundation is dedicated to helping underprivileged children and those less fortunate.

“I like to help people, and especially children,” Nekhidia told New York Post.

“I also have a voice, and I love children. They gravitate to me, so I want to help them in every way I can.”

During the graduation ceremony she walked across the stage at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and was met by massive cheering.

“I was like, oh my gosh, this is really, really happening,” she said.

“Oh my gosh, I thank God every day.”

Next step for Nekhidia is a Masters program at York College.
