Woman sparks heated debate over how often she washes her pajamas

Social media content creator, Allison Delperdang, has sparked a pretty heated debate after asking the online community how often they wash their pajamas.

What seemed like a pretty basic question has garnered a lot of attention, with Allison’s 30-second video racking up over 1.7 million views and receiving close to 8,000 comments!

Iowa mother-to-be, Allison, started off her TikTok video by explaining that her mother made her and her siblings wear their pajamas “multiple nights in a row” as they weren’t dirty enough to warrant a wash.

“I need to know if people wear pajamas multiple nights in a row. When I was younger, my parents always made us wear pajamas more than like, multiple nights in a row because they weren’t dirty. And I still do that as an adult. I’ve worn these three nights in a row,” she began.

“So I need to know if as adults we’re still doing that or should I be literally making dirty clothes every single night? Are we wearing pajamas multiple nights or what’s the situation?” she asked her 20,000 TikTok followers.

(When we refer to pajamas, this simply means anything you’d wear to sleep, which can obviously be anything from a t-shirt and boxers to a good old-fashioned nightie).

Experts weigh in

Martha Stewart actually previously weighed in on the debate, telling the TODAY show: “I absolutely suggest you wash your pajamas, your nightgowns, your underwear, whatever you sleep in, every day.”

The TODAY anchors – Carson Daly, Hoda Kotb, and Al Roker – also discussed this apparently divisive topic.

Daly revealed that he washes his pajamas “every day”, with both Kotb and Roker agreeing and saying the same.

An X (formerly Twitter) poll conducted by the show later revealed that the largest group, 46%, wash once a week. Just over quarter said they do it twice a week, and and about 20% said they wash theirs daily. Hilariously, close to 10% chose the “I’m supposed to wash them?” option (though, they’re probably living in a household where someone else does the washing…).

However, not everyone is as strict as Stewart, with Good Housekeeping magazine saying that once a week is the longest you should go, and the American Cleaning Institute recommending that pajamas get a good wash after being worn about three or four times.

What does the internet think?

As for what the internet thinks, Allison found out very quickly that everyone had a different opinion – and each person unsurprisingly believed that their way was the most ‘normal’ choice. Though, for the most part, the majority of Allison’s followers leaned more towards the ‘washing once-a-week’ or ‘only when stinky’ side of the debate (still, it did get pretty heated between certain users).

“No, new ones every night for me, I don’t wear jeans more than one day either (I know some people wear jeans several days in a row too),” one person commented.

“I’m a 2 night and done gal,” a further person wrote.

Another added: “I wear them for like a week straight haha I hate doing laundry.”

Someone else agreed, writing: “Wait. There’s people that DON’T wear their pjs multiple nights in a row????”

One internet user chimed in with: “I wear it till I feel like it’s dirty or I have a rough night of sweating.”
