Woman wears wire to catch ex-husband and new wife for murder

A woman has spoken out after helping to expose a murder committed by her ex-husband and one of her former best friends.

The tale begins with the sudden death of Mike Williams, who was killed back in December of 2000 after leaving home to go duck hunting on Lake Seminole in Florida.

When Williams failed to return home a search was initiated. 44 days later, however, authorities called it off, leaving many to speculate whether the real estate appraiser had simply run off of his own accord.

Then, six months after his vanishing, items belonging to Williams – including his fishing jacket, hunting license and a flashlight – were found by a local fisherman at Lake Seminole.

Kathy Aldredge had been a close friend of Williams’, and began to wonder over the circumstances of his death when her husband, Brian Winchester, started having an affair with Denise, Williams’ widow.

Speaking in Hulu documentary Mr. & Mrs. Murder, she explained: “To say they stabbed me in the back doesn’t even touch it. They had stabbed me in the soul.”

And Aldredge wasn’t alone in her suspicions. It turned out that Williams’ mother, Cheryl Williams, also believed that Brian and Denise had conspired to murder Mike. They lacked any concrete proof, though they would regularly meet up to discuss details of Williams’ disappearance and to search through potential clues.

Aldredge told People: “She and I spent a lot of years under the radar, Cheryl and I went through this together, even though we didn’t see each other every day and we didn’t talk every day, whenever we got together, this investigation was what we talked about.

“This investigation was what connected us, and it was a constant obsession throughout all those years, no matter how much time had passed between us, there was always that connection.”

Despite escaping justice for years, Brian and Denise’s plan to spend the rest of their lives free from jail unraveled when Brian kidnapped Denise at gunpoint to make her promise never to reveal what had really happened to her ex-husband.

After his arrest, Brian worked with police in exchange for immunity from murder charges, leading to the discovery of Mike’s body in 2017. Authorities were able to then determine that he had, indeed, been murdered.

It was then that Kathy got her time to shine when she was offered the chance to wear a wire to prove that Denise had also been involved in Mike’s death.

Kathy read from a script provided by cops during a phone conversation with Denise, telling the woman: “Brian told me that ya’ll planned it.”

Denise responded: “Planned what? Oh my God.”

Kathy said: “I know that you know something Denise.”

Kathy revealed to Inside Edition this year: “The whole decision to go that route of trying to figure out what happened here really came from a place of desperation because it seemed like no other avenues were working.”

Denise was ultimately sentenced to 30 years in prison for conspiracy to commit murder after a previous murder conviction was overturned.

Brian, meanwhile, got a 20-year sentence for kidnapping Denise, on top of a 30-year sentencing for conspiracy in relation to Williams’ death.
