On July 29th, a young woman on her way to São Paulo in Brazil reportedly died while making the journey. The woman whose identity has not been revealed was seen having difficulty breathing before she went into cardiac arrest.

Emergency responders arrived and performed CPR on her for 45 minutes but she reportedly did not respond to it and passed away.

However, an odd fact about her passing was the numerous iPhones that had been glued to her body. Her luggage revealed that she was carrying even more cellphones as well as some alcoholic beverages.

The police and their statement

The Paraná Civil Police have spoken about the event to NDTV World, a Brazilian outlet, saying, “The Paraná Civil Police are investigating the case and awaiting the conclusion of forensic reports to clarify the cause of death.”

They went on, “According to preliminary information, the woman, who was alone, was traveling from Foz do Iguaçu to São Paulo.

“The 26 cell phones that were glued to her body were seized and sent to the Federal Revenue Service.”

According to reports, sniffer dogs did not detect any traces of drugs on her person or luggage.

Theories about the woman

A theory claims that the woman might have been in the middle of smuggling phones which is why she chose to hide them beneath her clothing.

The devices are now in the custody of Brazil’s Federal Revenue Service. The body was sent to the Forensic Medical Institute.

There has reportedly been a surge in smartphone smuggling in Brazil in recent years according to a report from H2FOX. According to the report, in the first five months of 2025 alone, the seizure of smuggled devices had increased by 25%.

Recent statistics suggest that about 10,000 phones are smuggled into Brazil daily.

Phone Smuggling in Brazil

The reason for increase in the number of devices smuggled to Brazil has to do with the tax in the country adding significantly to the consumer price for the product.

An iPhone 16 for instance was being sold last year in Brazil for $1,396, per BGR

As of last year, the iPhone 16 was marketed at an eye-watering price of $1,396, according to outlet BGR. In comparison, the price for the same phone in America was only $799.
