Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s marriage has not always been perfect. Harry has previously revealed that he and his wife had their first big fight about a year into their relationship, but they got through it and eventually tied the knot.
Yet while the two these days appear to present a united front, it can be safely assumed that their royal exit changed things forever.
The Sussexes have since continued with their lives in the US, raising two children and moving on to new business ventures. They’ve not all been successful, mind, with the couple at one point being labeled “grifters.”
This year has seen Harry and Meghan in some ways “returned” to their previous roles, as they’ve embarked on two overseas trips, both of which have been branded “royal tours” by their detractors. Meanwhile, worrying reports about Harry missing the UK are troublesome, and one expert now claims Meghan Markle is not happy with what her husband is attempting to do.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle began dating in early 2016. It didn’t take long for the couple to fall in love, but just as in any relationship, there was destined to be ups and downs.
Prince Harry & Meghan Markle
For the prince and former Suits star, their first fight occurred less than a year after they met. In his book, Spare, Harry revealed the moment he “snapped” at his then-girlfriend.
“Maybe the wine went to my head. Maybe the weeks of battling the press had worn me down. For some reason, when the conversation took an unexpected turn, I became touchy,” Harry wrote.
“Then angry. Disproportionately, sloppily angry.”
Harry explained that Meghan took a comment he had made “the wrong way” because of their “cultural difference.” He then spoke to her “harshly” and “cruelly.”
“I was also just over-sensitive that night, I thought: ‘Why’s she having a go at me?’ I snapped at her, spoke to her harshly [and] cruelly,” Harry continued.
“As the words left my mouth, I could feel everything in the room come to a stop. The gravy stopped bubbling, the molecules of air stopped orbiting. Even Nina Simone seemed to pause.”
Meghan left the room and disappeared. He recalled her being away for a “full 15 minutes,” before he found her in their bedroom.
“She wasn’t going to raise children in an atmosphere of anger or disrespect”
“She was calm, but said in a quiet, level tone that she would never stand for being spoken to like that. I nodded. She wanted to know where it came from,” Harry wrote in Spare. He remembered Meghan saying: “‘Where did you ever hear a man speak like that to a woman? Did you overhear adults speak that way when you were growing up?’ I cleared my throat, looked away [and responded], ‘Yes.'”
Meghan continued by saying she would never “tolerate” a partner or co-parent who yelled at her as he had done.
“She wasn’t going to raise children in an atmosphere of anger or disrespect. She laid it all out, super-clear,” Harry wrote, noting that both he and Meghan “knew” that his anger wasn’t a result of their conversation.
“It came from somewhere deep inside, somewhere that needed to be excavated, and it was obvious that I could use some help with the job,” Harry explained.
“‘I’ve tried therapy,’ I told her. ‘Willy told me to go. Never found the right person.’ [It] didn’t work. ‘No,’ she said softly. ‘Try again.'”
Luckily, the fight didn’t spell the end of their relationship, and Harry and Meghan moved on. In 2018, she became the Duchess of Sussex when the couple tied the knot. However, while Meghan had grown into a beloved member of the Royal Family from the public’s perspective, it wasn’t long before things took a drastic turn.
On January 8, 2020, Harry and Meghan shockingly announced they were leaving royal life behind.
The real reason Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left the royal family
In an interview with The Cut, Meghan opened up the period wherein she and Harry decided to leave the UK. British press coverage scrutinized the Duchess, affecting her health and relationship with the royal hierarchy.
As Harry and Meghan’s lives — as well as the rest of the Firm’s — were taxpayer-funded, the tabloids claimed the intense scrutiny was of “public interest.” As a result, the couple suggested they could work and earn their own money instead of being taxpayer-funded. Meghan explained that “maybe all the noise would stop.”‘
In Spare, Harry touched on the subject as to just why they ‘fled’ royal life.
In he and Meghan’s opinion, they had to leave. Reminiscing about a visit to Frogmore Cottage after Prince Philip’s funeral, Harry said: “How beautiful it all is, I thought. And also how sad.”
“Once upon a time, this was going to be my forever home. Instead, it had proved to be just another brief stop.”
He added: “When my wife and I fled this place, in fear for our sanity and physical safety, I wasn’t sure when I’d ever come back. That was January 2020. Now, fifteen months later, here I was, days after waking to thirty-two missed calls and then one short, heart-racing talk with Granny: Harry… Grandpa’s gone.”
Harry and Meghan moved to the US to live a quiet life and privately raise their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. The paparazzi were far away, but things took another turn when they began speaking out about their less than pleasant experiences within the Royal Family.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were called “grifters”
Instead, they found themselves on the front page of papers worldwide, a trend that has been ongoing ever since. The couple secured multi-million dollar deals with both Netflix and Spotify, but not all their endeavors have met with success.
In June last year, their Spotifty deal was canceled, and at the time, Bill Simmons, the company’s head of podcast innovation and monetization, lashed out at the couple on his podcast.
“I wish I had been involved in the ‘Meghan and Harry leave Spotify’ negotiation. The Fucking Grifters, that’s the podcast we should have launched with them,” Simmons said on the Bill Simmons podcast.
“I have got to get drunk one night and tell the story of the Zoom I had with Harry to try and help him with a podcast idea. It’s one of my best stories… Fuck them. The grifters.”
Harry and Meghan felt leaving the Royal Family was best for them. Meanwhile, they have actively spoken out about how the lack of security and fear for their children’s safety is the main reason why they won’t bring Archie and Lilibet to the UK to visit their UK-based family.
But does Harry really like his new posh US life in his Montecito, California mansion? In June, royal expert Tom Quinn claimed that Harry is looking for a ‘permanent’ UK home as he misses his old friends.
Prince Harry ‘misses’ his UK friends and family, unnamed friend claims
An unnamed friend backed up that claim, telling the Sunday Times that Harry is “angry” about being isolated from his family and friends in the UK.
“He’s an angry boy,” the pal claimed. “Things haven’t turned out how he wanted. I think he misses being over here [in Britain] desperately and wants to be admired more. Anyone who knows him feels he’d rather be top of the pops here with everyone loving him, as they do with [his older brother] William and Kate.”
Another friend further told the Times that Harry’s pals still can’t forgive him for speaking out about the royals amid he and Meghan’s exit in 2020.
“I can’t believe he’d stoop so low,” the friend said. “It’s outrageously disloyal. Oprah, Netflix and then the book? Three strikes and you’re out.”
“Harry and [his wife] Meghan could have left with dignity and decency and not trash the institution,” another friend of both William and Harry told the Times. “The conclusion is they’ve made money from trashing his family.”
It appears that Harry, in one way, might ‘regret’ leaving his friends and family behind to live a very different life across the pond. But the fact that Harry is looking back on what could’ve been instead of focusing on what is now isn’t sitting well with Meghan Marking, royal expert Jennie Bond has stated.
“If Meghan is encouraging Harry to leave the past behind and move on, then I think it is a healthy move. They have made their decision, left the working royal family and left the UK,” Bond said.
Royal expert claims Meghan Markle is ‘frustrated’ with Prince Harry over ‘waste of life’
“He says he now regards the USA as home — at least for the time being,” the expert continued. “Brooding on the perceived injustices of the past and re-living old quarrels is a waste of a life, and I think Meghan sees that.”
Bond added that it could be “easier” for Meghan to look forward as she doesn’t have the same long history with the Royal Family as her husband does.
“It’s easy for her to look forward…ensconced as she is in a country and lifestyle she is so used to and clearly loves. But Harry has said he wants to be reunited with his family…so he is obviously going to think about what has happened and how they have come to this state of affairs,” Bond said.
“And that’s probably quite frustrating for Meghan…who seems to be at ease with estrangement from her own family. I don’t think Harry spends ‘all’ his time looking back….but the Harry I knew as a young boy was someone who enjoyed fooling around with his family and having fun with them.”
