Researchers’ verdict: drink coffee – that way you’ll live longer

Good news for all you heavy coffee drinkers out there – turns out you may live longer! According to new research, the chances for a prolonged life might be higher if you consume coffee.

“It is clear that coffee can be incorporated into a healthy diet and lifestyle,” says scientist Veronica Setiawan, one of the researchers behind these new findings.

The benefits of drinking coffee have long been advocated by researchers. Now there is further evidence for the positive effects of having a cup of coffee. Two new American studies, published in Annals of Internal Medicine, reveal that coffee may help us live longer.

“We cannot say drinking coffee will prolong your life, but we see an association. If you like to drink coffee, drink up! If you’re not a coffee drinker, then you need to consider if you should start,” says Veronica Setiawan.

One of the studies looked closely at the mortality of 520,000 people, coffee drinkers and non-coffee drinkers, collected from ten European countries. The other study, which also looked at coffee and mortality, followed 185,000 people for a period of 16 years.

According to EurekAlert, the studies show that people who drink a cup a day run a twelve percent lower risk of dying prematurely. More importantly: for people who drank at least three cups a day, the risk was reduced by 18 percent compared with the people who didn’t drink coffee at all.

“Coffee contains a lot of antioxidants and phenolic compounds that play an important role in cancer prevention. Although this study does not show causation or point to what chemicals in coffee may have this ‘elixir effect,’ it is clear that coffee can be incorporated into a healthy diet and lifestyle,” Setiawan adds in the statement.

It is assumed that coffee reduces the risk of dying from a stroke, diabetes, pulmonary and kidney diseases, cardiovascular diseases and the risk of any diseases in the digestive system.
