Does ketchup belong in the refrigerator? Heinz settles age old debate once and for all

It’s the age old question that has ignited debates in kitchens across the world – where does an opened bottle of ketchup belong?

Heinz, often seen as the king of ketchup, has finally settled the debate or maybe they’ve just started a new one. Either way, the company weighed in on how to properly store a bottle of ketchup.

“FYI: Ketchup. goes. in. the. fridge!!!” the brand’s UK account tweeted.

Of course a fierce debate ensued with some agreeing ketchup should be stored in the refrigerator while others protested insisting it be kept in the cupboard.

Other brands chimed in and questioned why it belonged somewhere cold when it was sold on a shelf.

According to a representative it has to do with the condiment’s natural acidity.

“There was only ever one correct answer, and we’re happy to share with Heinz Tomato Ketchup lovers across the UK that our ketchup has to be in the fridge,” Olivia Lennon, a representative for Heinz Tomato Ketchup, told FEMAIL. “Although we’re aware many Heinz Tomato Ketchup fans have been storing their ketchup in the cupboard, we do recommend refrigeration after opening.

“This is the best way to maintain the delicious tangy taste of our Heinz Tomato Ketchup that you know and love.”
