Which is why in the past, I only used mouthwash like Listerine for its intended purpose. That is, until now… As it turns out, there are actually a lot of unexpected uses for mouthwash. How about using Listerine as deodorant, a nail fungus remover, or a toilet bowl cleaner? Sure, there are products specifically made for each of these purposes. Nowadays, most people use Listerine as mouthwash, but its inventors had much more in mind.

Listerine, which was created in the late 1800s, was originally developed as an antiseptic. And from the beginning, it was intended to be used in surgery. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that it starting being marketed as a bad breath remedy.

The mouthwash contains useful ingredients, such as thyme, eucalyptus, and alcohol, so it’s not surprising that people have started using it in all sorts of creative ways. And it goes without saying that you can use other types of mouthwash, too!

1. Make your underarms smell fresh

Sometimes you need deodorant, but you’re fresh out. But Luckily, you can use Listerine to remove the smell of sweat, too. Simply pour a few drops on a cotton ball and dab it gently under your arms.

2. Eradicate nail fungus

According to the website “Top 10 Home Remedies,” Listerine can get rid of nail fungus. Simply fill a foot bath with Listerine and soak your feet for half an hour. Your feet will soon be fresh, soft, and smelling good! Some people also recommend adding vinegar for particularly difficult cases.

3. Clean the toilet bowl

This might not be the most economical tip, but sometimes you don’t have a choice. Listerine can make your toilet both clean and smell fresh. All you have to do is pour a little mouthwash in the bowl and scrub it with a brush.

4. Keep trash from smelling bad

The smell of garbage can literally make your life stink. One way to get rid of the stench is to line the bottom of a garbage bag with a piece of Listerine-soaked paper. Your trash will smell much fresher!

Toothbrushes can easily accumulate bacteria. One option is to boil it, but some people soak their toothbrush in a glass of Listerine overnight instead. Smart!

Most people would think you’re a little crazy if you started spraying Listerine on your computer or TV screen, but it’s a good way to clean this type of surface. Spray some on a dirty screen and wipe away fingerprints and residue with a cloth.
