Woman sparks intense internet debate after returning couch to Costco 2.5 years after she purchased it

Unlike other big-box stores, Costco has a cult-like following. And it’s no wonder. With its own private brand, affordable prices, and stellar customer service, not to mention their incredible return policy, Costco rises above the rest.

But time after time Costco’s generous return policy makes its way into the spotlight, and somehow each instance baffles the internet more than the last.

The most recent, shared on TikTok, has many questioning the morality of returning an item at Costco.

A woman has gone viral after proudly proclaiming she returned a couch to Costco two and a half years after she purchased it.

Jackie Nguyen shared her story on TikTok.

In her video, Nguyen takes viewers along for the ride as she returns the nearly three-year-old couch to the warehouse club.

She explained she was “nervous” bringing such a large item back to the store, but “we got it from Costco.”

After going inside she mentioned “a lot of people” staring at her, but it didn’t matter because of the store’s “awesome return policy.”

Another perk about Costco’s laid back return policy is you don’t need to have a receipt, which Nguyen did not have. And that did not prove to be an issue.

She explained to the store employee when she purchased the couch, and the employee was able to look up the purchase on their computer.

“And she goes, ‘OK, cool.’ And that was it,” she recalled. “She just asked me if there was anything wrong with it, or [if] I just didn’t want it or like it anymore. And I said I just didn’t like it anymore—we just don’t like the color anymore. And they gave us our full refund to his card.”

Nguyen shared a followup, which has since been deleted, stating she first confirmed with the store that it would be okay to return the couch.

While Nguyen turned off comments on her original video, it didn’t stop others from making reaction videos.

The response was somewhat mixed.

“I think it’s tacky to return it after 2.5 years,” one user wrote.

Meanwhile someone else chimed in saying, “Costco return policy is 8 years!!! I returned pots and pans that ended up peeling and they took them back without any problem.”

“So many people abuse Costco’s return policy. We pay for it at the end. Nice video!!!” another person wrote.

“I thinks it’s wrong but also.. how many times have you gone to Costco to spend 150$ leaving with 600$ of stuff 🤣 I feel somehow it evens out. maybe..”

What do you think? Is it okay to return a couch that you used for nearly three years? Let us know in the comments.
