Dick Van Dyke, 98, makes history at Daytime Emmy Awards

Dick Van Dyke made history over the weekend when he was awarded a Daytime Emmy Award.

The actor and comedian took home the prize for best guest performer in a daytime drama series for his role as Timothy Robicheaux on Days of Our Lives. In doing so, he became the oldest actor at 98 to have won a Daytime Emmy Award.

“I feel like a spy from nighttime television. I brought this lady up because she, by trouble and strife, is the love of my life, but because she was in the show — she played the cop who arrested me,” Van Dyke joked as he stood on stage alongside his wife Arlene Silver.

“I’m the oldest nominee in history. I can’t believe it. I was playing old men all my life. If I had known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself!”

“I’m 98 years old, can you believe it? This really tops off a lifetime of 80 years in the business,” he concluded.

From Bye Bye Birdie to The Dick Van Dyke Show to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to Mary Poppins, Van Dyke has been entertaining the masses for generations and despite his age has no plans to stop anytime soon.

“Give me a shot at it” he said when told he was only one letter away from securing EGOT status.

“I hope it’s not posthumous.”
