Deborah Roberts gives update on husband Al Roker after ‘a little tougher’ knee surgery

Al Roker is recovering, slowly.

The Today weatherman is once again on medical leave from the morning show as he takes time to recover from a knee replacement.

On Sunday, his wife Deborah Roberts gave an update on his condition.

She shared that her husband was “doing pretty well but moving a little slowly” following his May 9 surgery.

Roberts, who is ABC News’ senior national affairs correspondent, took to Instagram and explained how this time Roker’s surgery was a “little tougher” than his previous knee replacement.

“As many of you know he had a knee re-replacement, so a knee that had been replaced many many years ago had problems and had to be re-replaced.”

“It makes it slow going, it makes it a little tougher,” she said. “It was a harder surgery, so it’s a little bit harder to snap back from but he’s doing pretty well, moving a little slowly.”

While it may be “slow going,” Roker, 68, was up and walking one day post-op. He shared a video set to the song “Walk of Life” by Dire Straits on Instagram where he used a walker to maneuver through the halls of the hospital.

He also showed a clip of himself beginning physical therapy.

“Up and walking this morning on the #newknee #stepbystep thanks to @drdavidmayman Wearing a negative pressure pump to help facilitate wound healing,” he wrote alongside the clip.

During her Instagram Live, Roberts said that while her husband was sitting next to her, he was “not interested in getting involved today.” But he did want to thank everyone for their continued support as he recovered from his surgery.

“Thank you all so much, you have all been so kind and so generous and just so caring and compassionate about my family over these last several months as we’ve gone through a few things.”

Roker’s recent setbacks began in November 2022 when he mysteriously disappeared from Today for several days. It was later revealed that he had been hospitalized for blood clots in his lungs.

He didn’t return to the morning show until January 6, 2023. It was only then that he detailed how serious his condition had been.

“I lost half my blood” he said.

He suffered internal bleeding, which resulted in surgery that led to the discovery of two bleeding ulcers. Roker also underwent colon resection surgery and had his gallbladder removed.

Al Roker has been through a lot the past several months. Hopefully once he fully recovers from this knee replacement surgery everything is smooth sailing for a long time.
