Had Joan Rivers been alive, she would have been 90 years old today. Her daughter, Melissa Rivers took time to remember her wonderful mother and talk about what would the comedian been like on her birthday.
Melissa filmed a conversation between herself and her son Cooper as they discussed what they thought Rivers would have been like on her 90th birthday.
“The same one-liners, the same good jokes,” Cooper made a guess of his grandmother had she lived to see 90. Joan died in 2014 at the age of 81.
“A grandmother’s love for their grandchildren is like nothing else. I know she’d be so proud of the man Cooper has become,” Melissa wrote the caption for the emotional video. “I’m sharing memories of my mother from family and friends. What do you think she’d be most surprised by today if she were still alive?”
“I think she’d be proud of me,” Cooper says in the video. “I think she’d spoil me. I don’t think that’s changing with age.”
The mother and son duo talked about how Rivers focused on her beloved grandson on every celebration and made it about him. This prompted Melissa to joke and say, “What do you think she’d get you for her 90th birthday?”
“Something extravagant,” Cooper replied to her.
Melissa then steered the conversation towards more sentimental waters and asked Cooper what he missed most about his late grandmother. He replied emotionally, “She was just so caring,” he said, “and wanted to show up to everything I was doing and gave me her full support on everything I was doing, no matter what it was, what decisions I was making. She just always had my back.”
“One of the most frustrating things for me,” Melissa recalled with a smile, “was you would know you were in trouble, and you would run to her room and lay in the bed with her. And I’ll never forget her looking around, looking in the bed like, ‘What are you going to do now?'”
The mother and son reminisced with some sweet memories they had of the late amazing Joan Rivers. Then to conclude the heartfelt conversation, Melissa asked her son what he would say to his grandmother had she still been there.
“Love you, miss you, wish you were here,” he replied. “Miss the one-liners like crazy. I hope everything is good up there, down there, up there.”
His final words about the afterlife sparked laughter from everyone around the room, and Melissa said it was “Said like a true member of our family,”
While Melissa did not say what she would say to her mom in the video she posted, she did give an interview last November where she talked about her mom and what she would say to her had she still been around. She said, “There’s so many things. One is, ‘Oh god, I wish you could be watching the news right now. Number two, what I would say, in all seriousness, is that I would tell her that she would be really proud of my son, of her grandson.”
